Optimax Question

Hello. I am looking at a 2003 Lund Pro V with a 2003 150 Mercury Optimax. For the most part I have heard all good things about Optimax. Just making sure 2003 was a good year for the Optimax motor. Also, it has a little chip out of the skeg. Is that a cheap fix? Cheap as in $200 or less?

    Thanks. Chad

You are good to go with the motor and the skeg. Do your normal diligence but don’t let the Opti scare you.

The early 2000-2001.5 225hp had some problems. I don’t think that the 150’s had any issues. Good motors if you ask me.

The one thing you want to do with optis, is get the injectors cleaned every few years, both fuel and air. Most of the major problems were related to bad injectors.other than that, they’re great motors

    I have had a ’98 150 Optimax since new.
    It is a solid motor.
    No issues.
    Regular maintenance only.

Same motor, same year. Do the scheduled maint and no problems.

You could bolt a skeg guard to it. They are around $100, this will also prevent future chips. Bass pro carries a few different brands.
