Hi all, wondering what kind of experience people have had with Lews reels. I’m specifically looking at the Laser MG series reels. They seem nice and smooth, and I like the way the feel and look. Wondering about longevity, durability, etc. I fish primarily for wipers, walleyes and a little LMB action with em. I’m a Shimano guy and love my Curado, and I don’t expect this to compare to a Curado, but I hope it’s better than the Caenan I have. Thanks in advance–

You’ll get lots of opinions here…
Lews have attained the top status along with Shimano for a couple years now…In fact, I believe I saw on one of the Bass websites where they have more Pros fishing them than most everyone.
I still have my Calcutta’s but otherwise I have completely switched over my bass low profile reels to Lews…Shimano still makes a wonderful reel too. I would say the entry level Lazer MG will compare to the Caanen… Spend a few more bucks and try the Speed Spool Tournament MG…Awesome reel for $129

I have two older lew’s and they still perform flawlessly. I would not hesitate to recommend them.

Thanks for the info, guys. I like that recommendation, Tom. I may just upgrade because my Caenan is good, but it just hasn’t held up as well. I do seem to use it a lot, though. I like the finish on the reels, and the high speed did seem like a good reel. Had no idea they were high enough up to compare to Shimano. Good stuff.

I have 3 of them, they are very nice for the money. They are the best “cheap” reel out there IMO. Very smooth, great casting, and good drag. But I don’t think I would trust them to big wipers, being a graphite frame they will not take the abuse big wipers will give day in and day out.

Here is a 16# Striper I caught last Friday on Pickwick Res. in Alabama…This was on a Lews BBI-Pro and 12# Seaguar Tatsu. The Guide we had used a Lews Super Duty all last season for Stripers and Wipers.
    That’s what I would recommend for Wipers/Stripers on a regular basis. $159 is a great deal…

BTW…report coming on that trip as soon as I get all the pics!

My lews have been up to Canada laker and northern fishing and have caught hundreds of lakers some up to 40″ northerns up to 43″ (still looking for that 45″). Drag still working great and if I go this summer will have no problem taking them along.

I had my hands of a Lews BB 1 Pro at Cabela’s- $199. It was one of the smoothest baitcasters I’ve ever had my hands on. I don’t dare go back and touch it again, or it will be good-bye $200.

I think the Caenen comparison isn’t quite fair since the Caenen is a graphite frame. As long as you buy the $99 and up Lews models you will be buying a quality one piece aluminum frame reel, a minimum requirement for any baitcasting reel I buy.

I’m a Curado guy and I like their cast control better but I would have no problem running all Lews. I love my $99 Lews, in my opinion it it the the best $100 reel you can get.

Some interesting history about the Lews reels (originally manufactured by…Shimano) Lew Childre Story

Great stuff guys, thanks very much. Here it is, the new addition. Got me a SS1SH high speed spool, looks and feels very nice. Can’t wait to give it a try Wednesday when I’m outta work finally. Even found out there was a $20 rebate on this bugger; good thing I waited til the 1st to buy it, that’s the day it started!
