I’m going to look at a new to me boat. The guy has an older 82 motor on the boat. Its my only concern really on the rig. but he’s shown me that it has 140 compression on all 4 cylinders and the thing pops off as soon as you turn the key.

anything i need to watch out on with this motor? I’m going back to look at it and want to know if there is anythign i should be on the look out for.

    thanks guys.

I can’t comment specifically on that motor and I am sure guys can think of a ton of general things to check on a used rig.

One thing I have found with used boats is nothing beats a 5 min test drive on a lake though. Major issues should expose themselves rather quickly.

had a 79 80hp good motor ran great.
but look under the cowl for bad wires. an if oil injected
ck. for oil leaks.as they tend to get old an crack.
    thus the blown motor
    good luck

Test drive is a must for older outboards. This is a pre CDM motor and as mentioned it will probably have some bad wires that will need to be replaced, I can’t remember which color they had issues with but the insulation didn’t like the heat and broke down. Replacing the wires is pretty easy to do, get them to drop the price some for it and replace the wires yourself. It is normally the wires coming off the switch plate that has the issue. Good luck

Like the others said, test drive is a must and check both the forward and reverse, check the wiring all over, including the control cables going up to the control box, check the lower unit oil for water, when was the water pump last replaced, then I would either have it written in to the sale and or have it gone over by a certified mechanic at your local marine shop. If your still unsure, put a 30 day provision on it, im not sure if Minnesota’s lemon law covers boats or just cars. Good luck and happy boating.
