2002 Dodge Ram 1500 – Oil Guage

Figured I’d post a question here.

This afternoon I cam up to a stop light. I happened to look down and notice the check gauges light. Then I saw the oil pressure bottomed out. Got that sinking feeling when it suddenly popped back up to normal.

The engine was running normal and I checked the oil, that was good.

I did a quick search and people talk about the sender and other things. My question is you think I am good to let it go and hope it was an anomaly and see if it happens again?

pick up tube might be getting plugged usually caused by sludge. change your oil regulary?

I have a 2005 Dodge Ram that does the same thing occasionally. Mine is just the oil pressure sensor. Not a big deal… Perhaps a big deal if your oil pump is not working. Check the fuse. Otherwise check the code. If it is in fact just the sensor. Just get it replaced whenever.

If you are talking about the blown head gasket, yes.

was the engine making any rattling noises? If the pressure was that low you typically will start to hear something.

No, I wouldn’t have even noticed it had I not looked at my dashboard.

And it was very brief, maybe ten seconds before it shot back up to normal. That’s why I am not panicking, but then again, I am not a mechanic nor am I mechanically inclined. So I figured I’d get some good advice from IDO.

my old Dakota does this after coming off of a highway or bypasss to a stop light, oil pressure drops, get the light once in a while. Was going to take her in to get looked at but since it doesn’t get driven that much, I keep forgeting. It’s a 318, and think it’s a 2000 ish Dakota that doesn’t give me any trouble. Have always had the oil done on time and doesn’t leak a drop.

Mine doesn’t leak or burn oil either. I wonder how much replacing the sender unit or whatever costs.

It happened again to me once on the way to the Coon Rapids dam while idling at a light again. I slipped it into neutral and rev’d it slightly and it popped right back.

I had this happen on my 03 Ram with the Cummins in it, but mine would drop down and stay down for a while…then it would read again for a while and repeat. Changed the sender and all was good. I think it was around 90 from the dealer, it was a number of years ago.

Use the Red Green method…….A piece of duct tape over the gauge

Good question. I’m no motor head and I wasn’t real concerned with engine size when I bought it. Is it the difference between the number of cylinders? I can go count the plug wires.

Just buy a oil pressure sensor/sending unit and be done with it…
