Hey guys I’m brand new to tackle making. Just wondering what air brushes you guys like and why? I should probably tell you that I will mostly be painting walleye and crappie jigs. Thanks for the help

I think Iwata brushes are about the best for the money. They have several models and price ranges. Depending on how detailed you want to get in your painting I suggest finding one that has a range of tip and nozzles sizes that will allow you a lot of flexibility and Iwata brand brushes can offer that.

I do strictly Walleye jigs and I bought a Badger Universal 360.

Why ? Because it was affordable and it works very well for what I use it for. I use it for just the 2 tone on my powder painted jigs.

There better brushes (like Iwata) out there but I dont need a HIGH end brush for what I do.

    Enjoy your new hobby

Hey guys thanks for the replies so far. Do you think I’m better off using powder paint over air brush for jigs? If I go the route of powder paint would it be wise to get a fluid bed? Thanks again

MANY more options with a brush. There is a decent learning curve. I have self taught/learned through trial and ERROR, youtube and various other internet methods.
I cut my teeth witha cheap brush for $50. I do not recall at this point if it was good or bad, didnt really know at the time but I do know that I could not get parts for it after I screwed up the needle and tip.

After that lesson I went ahead an got a Iwata knowing i could get parts for it and they have a reputation for quality so it will last.

Feel free to PM with any questions on the process, as mentioned it is a lot to learn and I would be happy to help ya out.

Not sure on how many jigs you plan on doing in one sitting but,I have owned 4 different fluid beds and all 4 have only worked good for only so long..I gave up on them and just hand still my powder.

My reason for powder painting my jigs is…I buy alot of my powder in bulk,it is quick to dry and hard as a rock when cured right.

I use the paasche model h-1 paired with createx paint. I found this to be a good combo for the price. I don’t get real detailed on jig heads, but I will paint a sexy shad scheme with 3 different colors every once in awhile.
If doing standard walleye/crappie jigs, bullet weights, things with no detail required, etc….I just go with powder paint for the durability. No doubt you will want to use a fluid bed for the powder paint. I built mine out of PVC and coffee filters for less then $20.

    Good luck.

If no detail, “YES” without a doubt powder paint. Hands down, if done properly powder paint is very durable. Fluid bed and heat gun are a must. See my post above for fluid bed and I just went to Harbor Freight and purchased a heat gun for $7.

After that, buy the colors you like and you’re set.

I prefer to airbrush most of my jigs with powder. As mentioned, most durable finish. I use the Badger 260 abrasive. Cheap and works ok. You don’t get the very fine detail, but for what I need, I’m satisfied with it.
