In need of new tiller. mud motor don’t cut it for fishing and I want to keep hours off it so it lasts longer. I was looking at a f60 or Johnson e60. I run a 18′ 6″ gatortrax that has a 280lb mud motor that is around 54hp now. Boat weights around 800. Question is would a 60 idle down to troll with on mod-v that don’t draft much? Or should I go with a 50hp?

Hard to say if the 60 would troll down far enough on that boat. My guess is that it would be pretty close. You can get the 60 with a VTS button on it that will troll your RPMS down even farther. Being in a river good chance you will get down to under 2mph up river. On a lake I would guess between 2 to 3mph. Pretty easy to push against the bow mount or trolling bag to drop down lower.
March 14, 2014 at 7:12 am #1395987Mikes got a point. I think I would play it safe and go with Yamaha 50. Good motor (my opinion)
March 14, 2014 at 7:18 am #1395993I have a 60 Yammaha on a 18ft.G3 and it will troll down to 1.6 when in flat calm water. The VTS is a sweet feature.
March 14, 2014 at 7:32 am #1396003Yamaha the best option for trolling down ? Biggest factor would be for trolling cranks on river. I have built in tank that’s only 7gal. I might have to add a tank have plenty of room. Mud motor I could run from bay city to maiden rock and back over half tank burned.
March 14, 2014 at 7:39 am #1396012My first choice would be a yamaha. And my second and third choice would also be a yamaha. 50hp or 60hp. Probably 60 if fishing with three people a lot.
And since a tiller throw some splash guards on it and speed will never be an issue. I mean back trolling…
wannaplayPosts: 149March 14, 2014 at 7:50 am #1396019I use a drift sock, to get under 2. it is a little harder to get up on plane when the sock is deployed…
March 14, 2014 at 8:06 am #1396029Most likely 2-3 people. Boat has a hunt deck so not sure if it wound back troll and with no keel (flat as a pancake and smooth as glass) . So it doesn’t track good windy days suck.
March 14, 2014 at 8:18 am #1396037Can you still get short shaft outboards? That boat looks like a short transom. I would just get another boat and trailer.
March 14, 2014 at 8:49 am #1396052No I had tall transom added since I had mud motor from previous boat. 20″

My 60 absolutely sips gas.
March 14, 2014 at 9:08 am #1396068Hey henny how’s the fishing been? I’ve got the 2013 yammy 60 on my 98 alumarcraft mag 165 little heavier boat than yours and a deep v configuration with the vts system on the current on the miss right now I was getting down to 1.4 with just me in it that was pretty impressive for me and I get 30 at full speed . I put 6 gallons of gas in it and have been down 5 times and ran all the way down to the ice once and still have enough for one more trip yet I’m sure.

This is right on advice. That sock will anchor the bow tighter than stink on a skunk . Trim up the big motor a bit, prop is way less efficient, n back troll.
hunter1723Posts: 349March 14, 2014 at 3:37 pm #1396203I have the similar set up and I would put a yamaha on it for first choice as well. Wait that is what I did. If I had to do it all over again? I would put another Yamaha on it. I have told people before about horsepower. Find that rating plate that you have and whatever it says put that on it. Underpowering a boat is like going to the strip club. The girl who is rated an 8 and costs less might get the job done, but the girl who is a 10 and makes you loaf in your pants and costs double is twice the ride!!!!!!!!!
hunter1723Posts: 349March 15, 2014 at 7:47 am #1396307Then do the coast guard hull rating formula to see what you can put on it. I guarantee you they will if you don’t . And when they do you can bet your fine won’t make you look like this anymore . Probably more like this .
March 15, 2014 at 10:45 am #1396344I don’t have to worry it’s called common sense. Why would I put a huge motor on boat and make it worthless for fishing…… 18.5×70/15 = 86.3333 is too much for fishing

Didn’t slow this guy down. I am not even sure if this is legal. I have a feeling he will be holding onto this boat for awhile. Oversized Idea
March 17, 2014 at 10:53 am #1396799So I finally got a email back from gatortrax the recreational hull version of my boat is 60hp so I’m good with the f60 witch is nice.

Great motors as well.
