Fixing a speedo

    Hello all,

My speedo is stuck at 30mph. Was running fine when I bought it, and something happened the first time I was out. It is on a Lund w/ a Yamaha Vmax HPDI. I am looking for pinched lines, etc. back by the motor, but can’t find anything. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    nubbinbuck,

Not sure if the speed reading is taken off the front of the lower unit of the motor like the Mercury’s or not, but a air hose shot in the pin hole will help unclog any weeds or debris that gets stuck in there. That problem is pretty common.

Hope this is the speedo you were talking about!

I was afraid to reply to this one Mike. I thought maybe you changed teams on me. Just kidding. I have the same problem on my 115 right now. I’ve just been too lazy to pull out the air compressor to try to fix it. I use the GPS when trolling anyway, so I don’t pay attention to it that often.

If it is like the Mercury pickup on the front of the motor, many times a stick or leaf may get pressed into the pickup hole. I just keep a 1/16 drill bit in my console and use it in your fingers to hand turn the debris out of the hole. The fact that yours is stuck on 30 mph sounds like that is exactly what is wrong.

My Suzuki has done that a few times after fishing the crystal clear waters of the Mississippi. I usually just pick out the hole with wire OR take a run up the clean Croix

Maybe you ran into that t-shirt that got caught on my motor when we went out last week!

So it sounds like I need to find that hole. I’ll have to look a little closer – I didn’t see it. I do see a very small wire that is grounded at the top of the lower unit, and seems to run within it…. not sure what that is.

Speaking of T-shirts… I caught another one on Sat. This was an old Pink Floyd shirt. So let’s see here… Pink Floyd and ‘native vegetation’ being used alongside the mighty Miss… Who would have guessed??

    nubbinbuck,

The little “speedo” hole is located right on the front of the lower unit. Just below where you would normally put a transom saver on the lower unit. The hole is pretty small and all of the above remedies should help clean it out.

I would guess that to fix a stuck Speedo is to use two fingers in a pinching motion and pull it out of the crack.

My speedo hole is located behind my lower unit.

    It’s been a crazy day

I got a piece of wood stuck in mine from running a back water slough and hitting a floating log. Tried a small drill bit in my fingers and wasn’t to succesfull so I got the cordless drill, and needless to say I now have wood and a piece of a broken drill bit stuck in it. So I run by rpm’s until the bit falls out

Kevin, it was just a matter of time before someone jumped on the “two fingers” bandwagon!
If you wouldn’t have done it, someone else would have.
What may have been even funnier is Bigweave saying he got a piece of wood stuck in his!!

I haven’t laughed this hard in a while.

    Hey guys,

Thanks for the info. I found my hole and used a 1/16″ drill bit to clean it out. All is fine now. Smelly funk came out of it !!
