What a turd with its single blade. I used my brothers 10″ auger yesterday to drill a couple dozen holes. It was so slow and it felt like the handles could break. It seemed like a gas hog too. It looked like a 1/4 to 1/3 tank of gas when we started and I saw none in there when I finished the last hole. I’m sure if he spent alot of $$$ he could switch bits to a Lazer but I’ll take my Mako over that thing every day.

Was the blade sharp? You are comparing Apples to Oranges, put a Lazer bit with sharp Blades on it and it should cut right with your Mako.

Compare the Mako to a Jiffy Propane, again Apples to Oranges.

Those jiffy propane models do cut fast and start nice. The weight is just to much for me. That and the cost per hole. My buddy only gets like 35 – 40 holes per 1 Lb. tank. Being those tanks cost about the same or more than a gallon of gas I’d say the cost per hole is 4 – 5X higher than with my 15 year old Lazer.

    Me neither

    I have a 6yr old Mag 2000 8″ and it works great….although a 10″could be different…..

A chipper blade is slow but not THAT bad…and I can drill all day on a tank

Mine seems to work fine, too. Punched a bunch of holes with it on Saturday. Fired right up, chewed through the ice fine. Sure I’d like a nice fancy new auger (those Honda-powered ones look sweet). I’d also like a brand new boat, too, with the optional hotline to James Holst for when I can’t catch fish. But hey…a guy’s gotta work with what’s got.

X2. A chipper isn’t nearly as fast as a lazer bit, but much more durable.

Unless it came with a dull blade it should be fine. I usually bring my auger so his doesn’t get used that much. I’ll bet in in the 2 or 3 yrs he’s had it its drilled less than 100 holes. Yes, I’m sure if he had a lazer bit it would be much faster. It did start really nicely.
