I have tested one. I like it for a 17′ tiller it was a very nice boat. Planed out high in the water for little bow spray, broke large waves well. Some trim and finish could be better but Thats a different price bracket then. I might recommend a power steering unit if you fish foul wether, my shoulder got pretty sore but then again I probably would not drive my own boat that way either…

It was a very fishable boat. Trailers could use an upgrade. If you were looking for a boat to keep for some time it might work out as I dont see a huge resale value being a new small company nor do I know about the longevity of the hull due to the fact Ive only fish one day in it.

Most definitely worth a test day. They used to have a boat you could test for the day, call em up.

I looked at it pretty close at last year’s boat show. Its very similar to the Yar-craft 1785 bt if you’ve ever been in that. I like the Backtroller a little better than the Yar-craft in that it has removable front and rear casting decks and has 9 foot rod lockers. For these reasons, it should appeal more to the true multispecies fisherman…jig for walleyes, cast for muskies, etc..

I like the looks of these boats. And the layout is really nice. When you say the trailer, What kind of trailer are you talking?

So I just learned of these boats yesterday, and after a good amount of researching last night, and way to much today at work, i am intersted. very interested. I guess most of the simple questions have been answered off of their website, but for you guys who have been in them, Did you like the flooring? (water traction) The other boat I was looking at was all fiberglass floor with snap in carpet. Wich I really liked because I hate dirty floors. but this looks pretty nice too. Also on the site they show an upgrade option for the Trailer to aluminum. Has anyone seen this? Not sure I have eever seen an aluminum boat trailer before.

I looked a lot at these boats online and as a Wellcraft pleasure boat owner I can tell you that I love designers that take some key cues from what has been proven to work in saltwater and apply that thinking to freshwater boats. Nothing will show the shortcomings of a boat’s design or construction more quickly than hardcore saltwater use.

I love the hull shape of the Backtroller. To me, it looks to be influenced by Yarcraft, Grady White, and I see elements of Regulator and Midnight Express as well. All of these are surpreme riding machines when the going gets rough. Looking at the hatches, the clean design with minimal line-fouling things sticking up, etc. Lots to love.

There’s a reason why almost no saltwater fishing boats come with carpet in the cockpit. It’s a constant maintainance hassle. It’s hard to clean, slow to dry, needs to be kept covered, and it wears out quickly.

Personally, I’d say Latoka, don’t let the carpet be a big make/break. Buy the boat and use it for a while. If you still want carpet, a custom snap-in carpet is an easy add on down the road. Buy the boat for the boat, because you can’t change a bad ride or poor design.

When I bought my Wellcraft, ride quality was my #1 concern. In the metro area, we’re going to be constantly running through trash because tuna boat wakes are a way of live. You can change most things about a boat, but the one thin you can’t change is the ride.

The same could be said for the footwells in my vehicles!

Yeah! You’ve got the jackasses running around in their Wellcrafts!

this might not be the best place for this. But All I have ever owned is Mercury. I have not been 100% happy, but nothing is perfect right? I would like a 4 stroke I think. Any pro or cons on the suzuki? Sure see a lot more mercury’s on the water.

In Japan they see a lot more Suzuki’s then Mercury’s.

I would never fear hanging the Suzuki. Like most motors today they are very good. Also in todays world if you are taking a out of town trip or vacation it only takes minutes to locate the nearest dealers should you need them.

From what I’ve seen and learned the only three things to consider with the Backtroller are…….

    1) Will it fish the way I want to fish?

    2) Is it in my budget?

    3) What will the bride think of it?

Hahaha, #3 probably should be on the top of the list. Take a look at the specs for the Suzuki, it’s a 91.7 cubic inch motor, same as thier 90hp, rather than a 70hp built off a 50/60 powerhead. Keep in mind that the BT is a fairly hefty hull for it’s size (weight wise), so the top end is not the highest. But I think John Thelen has done a nice job of putting a package together at a reasonable price-point.
