New to this forum so I am sorry if this has been hashed over and over again here.

I am used to using 27lb LC. I know 27lb runs 5′ deep for every color at 2mph. Thinking about changing to 18lb LC Suffix next season and I know that the line diameter is smaller and the weight is considerably less so I am wondering what depth 18lb will run per color?

Thanks in advance & Merry Christmas

The weight of the line is the same, it the pound test rating of the outer shell that is the difference! Personally, I wouldn’t buy the junk…I spent $200 on Suffix leadcore last spring only to have to replace it all by late summer, the lead breaks inside the dacron and then pokes out through it….right out of the box I thought the stuff was great, better feel of the lures and greater depth with less line but it went to hell fast! if they can fix the lead breaking issue, it will be a great product but until then…save your money!

I’ve been using Sufix Lead for 2, maybe 3 years now. Have yet to have one problem with it.

I’ve always argued the running depth per color. I say 5′ per color is way generous. My leader is about 15-18′ long on my lead, which is included in the total feet out. I’m running a #7 Flicker with 63′ out at 2.2 mph and I’m hitting bottom at about 12′. According to ‘5’ per color’ I should be hitting bottom about 16-18′, I would say. Makes a difference.

After reading all the post above, my first thought is:

Are you all talking about the same lead core line?

Half of you appear to be talking about Sufix Advanced lead core.

    Sufix Advanced Lead Core

The other half appears to be talking about regular Sufix lead core.

    Sufix Lead Core (regular)

The regular lead core tends to sink approx 5′ per color at 2mph.

The advanced sinks approx 7′ per color at 2mph.

Are you hooking the LC to a release on a board or stopping it so it is in your rod tip when you are trolling? Either practice will cause the lead to fracture eventually. Even lead will work harden if cycled enough causing a fatigue fracture. That is why you put the LC inline and fine tune your depths by leader length, speed and the amount of backing beyound the LC. The suffix is more prone to this because the cover over the lead is thinner. Hence the deeper running depth. One way to counter this is to have a rod with a very soft tip so the weight of the LC out makes so there is almost no bend in the LC at the tip of the rod so there is no cyclic bending of the LC. The constant cyclic bending at one location is what causes the lead to break. I’m sure we have all done this with a paper clip. I agree though the old LC worked fine for years. On trick to is to add a snap-on weight just after deploying the LC to add depth. Thats why for salmon fishing I only setup with 5 colors. Who needs 10 color rigs when it is that simple to adjust the 5 color rigs and get the same effect.
