Looking at this reel for my favorite all around walleye rod. It is a St Croix Avid ML XFast . I am leaning towards the 1000 size, but am afraid that it is too small. Advice?

I have gone to 1000 sized reels for braided line for walleyes, they hold plenty of it. For mono I still use a 2500 size as I think it prevents coiling a little better.
December 8, 2013 at 9:14 am #1369628You cant go wrong with Shimano reels.
Keep in mind the 1000 series only holds 4/140, 6/110 of line but does only weigh in at at 6.5 oz and the 2500 holds 6/200, 8/140 of line but weighs 9.0 oz.
Both retrieval rates are about the same, depending on method of use (hard line or mono)the 1000 series may work just fine for you.
The 1000 series reel may balance out a little better on that rod tho..
If you can take the rod in and place each reel on it and see how they fell on your rod and YOU be the judge as to what you are looking for in the combo.

I currently have both sizes on two of my rods…
For my 6’6 MLF that I use for live bait and small blades I have the 1000 series, its nice and light.
For my 6’8 MXF that I use for plastics I have the 2500 size. This reel is absolutely perfect. Holds a lot of line for loooong casts, has more line pick-up per turn of the handle which I really like for fishing fast, and is not heavy at all. Very well balanced reel! So, I think the 1000 will be fine for vertical jigging or fishing live bait, something slow where you don’t need a lot of line pick-up. I like the small size and light weight of the 1000 but it just doesn’t feel right to me.

Something I could probably get use to, perhaps, but something to consider. As well wanted to use it this winter but after a few gos at it the bearing grease, or whatever reason the thing is a beast to turn when its cold. Very annoying one can’t use this reel in the cold right out of the box, don’t feel I should have to take it apart and apply different grease/oil for it to work properly in the cold. If you are interested I could give you a real good price on mine if you decide to go with it.
December 8, 2013 at 10:09 am #1369643While both reels would work for you on your Avid rod you would probably appreciate the 2500 series better. The 2500 will give you more options as far as proper amounts of heavier lb test line. Good luck with your new reel.

I have the 6’8 mxf legend elite with a 6930 Pl. president. Longer rod little bigger reel, shorter rod 1000 symetre perfect. btw love the legend elites
December 12, 2013 at 1:31 am #1370874LOVE the Symetres. They take a beating and still perform very well. If I remember correctly, the 1500 size isn’t really available anymore. I sure wish it was, because I feel just a bit better with the 1500 than 1000 size for walleyes and wipers. I do agree with what was stated above though, the 1000 should work fine with braid, but the 2500 may be better for mono. Great reels.
