I had a strange problem last weekend that maybe some of you mechanics can help me with. The starter on my 125 Merc had not been engaging all the time lately. I replaced the spring and bendix kit. Seemed to fix the problem. Then this last weekend, I heard a noise that sounded like it does when the battery doesn’t have enough juice to turn the motor over. I tested the battery and it had full power. So I popped the cover, removed the flywheel guard and discovered that the nut that holds the bendix and spring on had spun completely off and was gone. Luckily, I had kept the old parts and used the old nut with some Loc-Tite. So far it seems to be holding. Is there anything else I can do to keep it from happening again?

WOW….Did I write this post? I had the exact same thing happen on my Merc 125. I followed the same procedure and have no issues yet. My thinking was I didn’t get it tight the first time, but went with the loc-tite also.
