It’s the unit that will be going on my boat this winter. I can’t swing it this summer, but once I get my pennies saved up, it’s there. Tell me what the Lowrance units will do this unit can’t???

It’s one of the best priced full-size GPS out there. It’s basically the same as the Lowrance GlobalMap 4800. It will run the new Navionics Premium Chip. I had one guy buy an Intellimap 480 and about one month later bought another one. Said he really liked it. As far as black and white fixed mount units go, I don’t know why this one wouldn’t do the trick, and at a low price point.

I recently purchased the Lowrance GlobalMap 4800 and the Navionics chip for Mille Lacs from Jolly Marine. It’s a great unit for a super price. I’m a happy camper!

I’m working on a review of the unit. Couldn’t be easier to use.

i have the intellimap 480. i am happy with the unit overall. the only thing that i have found that i don’t like is the size of the icons. they are really small, and when you zoom out they are hard to see on the screen. is there a way to enlarge the icons? i went with the 480 because of the size of the screen compared to the handheld units. i have it rigged portable, 12 volt plug, antenna attached to a hand clamp, and the unit itself is on a johnny ray with a base in each of my boats and one on the wheeler and one on the snowmobile. i use it in my buddy’s boats too, as long as they have a 12v plug-in. i put the wires in a fanny pack to keep them together and not all in a big rats nest.

puddlepounder, that’s a nice set up you’ve got there. I don’t think there is anyway to change the size of the icons. My thinking is that they are going to be smaller as you zoom out and easier to see as you zoom in since they represent as small area (one marked point). I have never tried but I doubt that it can be changed. Anyone else know?

Tom, Try using the black X which I think is about 4 icons down in the top list of icons. It really shows up good on the grey back ground. Speaking of using icons, for you guys that are running the 4800 units, I have found some neat tricks that work really well for me. The auto zoom works great for running at high speeds in rough water. The unit will zoom to your desination so your not having to push the zoom button when your crashing across the lake. I also figured out that you can drop icons where ever you are on the map at your current location. The manual didnt explain this very well, but what you want to do is get rid of the cross hairs on the screen, its the lines that run north to south and east to west. These lines are displayed whenever you use the arrow touch pad keys. This feature is good for marking icons anywhere on the map. But say you want to drop and icon on a school of fish that you just marked. If you still have the cross hairs on the screen, simply push the exit key to get rid of them, then hit your icon key. An icon will drop right on top of the triangle which is your boat on the map. As soon as you get away from that spot, the icon will appear. Also by getting rid of the lat and long lines on the screen, you will always show on the center of the screen.

One last tip. Say your buddy has a hot spot for you to try out and he gives you the lat and long numbers. Use the arrow touch pad keys and just toggle north to south and east to west and watch the numbers at the bottom of the screen unti you hit the spot. Then drop an icon and your ready to go.
You guys may have already figured these tips out but just figured I would share them..

Derek, good tips man. I use the icon feature like that all the time. It’s so simple with just one push of the icon button that I’ll hit it as soon as I set the hook when trolling for ‘eyes. It definately helps me get back to fish later on, after I’ve cleared my trail. If that spot continues to produce then that icon becomes one to hang onto for future trips. Not a bad place to stop and throw jigs or slip-bobbers too!

Thats right Wade, I run one unit on the bow and the other on the dash. I set the hook and reach down and hit the icon key or if someone in the boat gets a fish. Very simple. No markers to draw attention and no hassle pulling them back in. And the accuracy is awesome.

Did you get an order from a friend of mine last week? I think he ordered the 3300C?? with the mille lacs chip.

I sure did Derek, and thank you for the referral. He bought the Lowrance GlobalMap 3300C and the new Navionics Hotmaps Premium chip which has Mille Lacs 1-foot contours. I love these color units with the Navionics maps.

I was thinking about the icon size question and I realized that one of the reasons it’s no problem for me is that with my color unit the icons are easy to see, even when zoomed out, but I’ll bet it’s harder with a black and white unit. One more reason to go color if you can…

I have no problem seeing mine on the grey either when zoomed out. But I do have 20/10 vision so it can be harder to see for some guys.

I don’t think it’s generally a problem but I do get some calls from guys once in a while and the first thing they say is “my eyes are getting worse… what do you suggest”. 1. Color 2. Larger screen

I do like the fact that a guy can get into a color unit for a more reasonable price these days…

Derek, if you get a chance to check out that new Premium chip that your buddy bought, let me know what you think. I believe it should be the same as your Mille Lacs chip.
