I run 2 Interstate 31’s on my PD 55/Ipilot for my 16′ 40hp 12 gal tank boat with 4 batteries total, they last around 5-6 years of use per set.
For me that’s roughly $34 a year for battery cost.
They still hold a decent charge when I replace them,I sell them to a friend that does the demo derby’s.
I believe my PD55 works harder on my 16′ Lund than a 80lb or bigger does on a bigger boat, thus mine being a 12 volt and the bigger T/M’s are 24 volt with more thrust.
Some people have better luck with other brands of batteries with other T/M’s, to each his/her own.
I also dont use a built in charger, I use a Matco automatic/manual computerized 10/2 amp charger, when batteries are new I will charge on manual at 10 amps the first time, after that I charge at 2 amp manual,it will charge deeper on the 2 amp.I alternate from 10amp one time and 2 amp next time ect…
If needed to charge overnight I use the 10amp automatic.
Biggest thing to remember is … it’s the heat that wrecks a battery NOT the cold, when charging make sure your batteries have ventilation for charging gasses or heat can escape.
Any battery that goes bad in the cold was BAD/WEAK when it was warm, remember it takes less amperage in warm weather to turn over an engine than in the cold.
I practice as stated above on my own boat and will continue to until I learn something that works better for the Interstate batteries I use.
5-6 years for a set of batteries is good in my mind !
Chevy/Ford ? I am a Chevy man !
