Anyone know if a 2001 Mercury 90 horse four stroke is compatible with the engine data interface on lowrance units with proper NMEA connection? Tried looking around online and could only find info on new outboards.

    Thanks

Mercury Outboards do not have a NMEA output. You have to also purchase one of the gauges, see the PDF link below.
    Lowrance connection PDF

From the document “To connect to a Mercury engine you need either a VesselView 4, or a VesselView 7, or a Mercury Single or Multi‐Engine Gateway Module or a MercMonitor
™ that has NMEA 2000 ® output along with a SmartCraft compatible engine.”

This can get rather expensive. I was not able to find out if a 2001 90hp 4 stroke is compatible with the gauges.

Merc came out with a cable last year that allows the engine data to be hooked into via nema 2000 without having to buy a smartcraft gueage or the like. I called them and talked to them about it but it was still more than I wanted to spend at the time. Call them up and they will give you details on exactly what you need

A cable is all? Sure wish they had that back when I was looking (early 2011).
I ended up spending almost 1k on a MercMonitor, analog to digital conversion for my motor, and cables. Started out the project just wanting to know how many hours were on my motor without having to drag it to a shop. Having the troll control and all the other engine details has been a great benefit though.
The way I went was probably not worth the money but where else would I spend my money if not for a boat and fishing gear?

It’s much more than just a cable, the MNEA 2000 “Gateway” allows the use of Mercury-Smartcraft enabled motors to integrate with a MNEA-2000 network. Unfortunately, a year 2000-vintage is an early version of SmartCraft, and probably not compatible.
