I grew up a walleye fisherman in SD, but now I find myself in La Crosse where there is some pretty good bass water. I’m working on my bassin’ knowledge and skills as well as my bassin’ tools. I want to buy a rod and reel to use primarily for flipping tubes, worms, and jigs.

Any suggestions for rod length and action? I was thinking of a 6’6″ medium action rod.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

how tall are you? alot of shorter people dont like long rods

i have used the team diawa denny brauer flipping sticks in the 7’6 heavy when i was about 17 and hated it i went to a 6’6 medium heavy used it for years now it is a multi purpuse rod i got bigger now i am using a 7’4 heavy extra fast tip quantum tour edition pt and love it

if your looking for more of a all around rod go with the 6’6 medium heavy but if you want to flip and pitch wo heavy brush get you a big heavy action rod

other things besides height to considder is the amount of low hanging trees youll be fishing under and how high you raise the rod tip on your pitches

Thanks for the info Dusty. I’m 6’2″ and the casting decks on my boat should keep me high enough above the water. I didn’t really want to go with a rod over 7′ so I could still use it for other purposes. I don’t plan on pitching into logs–mainly just under trees along the water and into grass and lillies.

Cabela’s has some pretty good deals on rod/reel combos. I’m thinking of going with the Cabela’s Prodigy reel and the Fish Eagle II rod. Anyone ever had problems with these products? I just sent back the Cabela’s Black Label reel after it crapped out on me after only using it for less than a dozen trips on the water. I certainly got what I paid for ($50), but at least they took it back with no hassle.

I’m only 5’9″ and I prefer a minimum of 7′ for flippin’. I love using 7’6″ but I’m not one to look for multi-purpose. I want to know that if I’m going to do a certain thing, I’m rigged for that certain thing! I only slip back to a 6’6″ if I’m looking for a little less “oomph” in the blank.
