Looking to buy my first boat, have a good deal lined up, but this Tracker Grizzly has a channel along the hull (for jet motor?). Does it look like this prop Mercury work well given the current set up? Ideas? Comments?
    Thanks

Tough to say. Is that cut out ran the length of the boat or only a foot or two?

If its only a foot or so you may run into issues with it blowing out/cavitating.

If the entire way it may want to cavitate under WOT speed.

Only way to know is test drive, make sure to try some high speed sharp cornering as that is a good way to see how easy it will blow out if infact it is not during WOT speeds. Listen for the RPMs of the motor to jump.

There are a lot of those around the chippewah river and they work just fine. There are many setups that are like that. I have a buddy that has a tiller 40 etec on a boat just like that. Runs awesome.

That looks like a tunnel hull to me. Special hull design to run in very shallow water. On plane, water flows down the tunnel right into the prop. Usually the lower unit is only a few inches below the bottom of the boat. I’ve talked to a few guys with them and they claim to be able to run on plane in 4-6 inches of water. Those types of boats are usually seen on really shallow rivers. Tunnel hulls are relatively expensive compared to a regular flat bottom boat (2-3x). The guys I’ve talked to say they’re the cats azz, just don’t come off plane in shallow water or your screwed.

Have talked with a few different people that say to put pontoons or floats on the back of a boat like that other wise with the tunnel hull it tends to sit very low in the water. Need to get it on the water.

very compatible. tunnel hulls allow more air under the boat and the boat rides higher in the water. this does two things, less drag so the boat is faster and the main reason they put them on jon boats is less hull in the water so you can run in shallow water

    Absolutely correct.

One addition: Tunnel hulls are NOT compatable with jet outboards. Jets need the maximum planing surface to run effectively and since a jet does not protrude downward, there is no reason for using a tunnel hull.

Looks perfect to me. Tunnel Hulls (Contrary to popular belief) are not made to run with jet OB’s. Actually they perform quite poorly with jet motors. Chris

When looking at jon boats years ago I noticed one company that made a tunnel for both a jet and prop motors. Found it interesting the jet tunnel was the small of the two, not as deep a tunnel as the prop. Might of only been a 1″ deep.

    Welcome to In-Depth!

Looks like the cockpit is towards the back also. Lots of weight towards the back if you are built like I am. Like others have said take the thing for a good test drive.
