Been working this weekend on getting my Jon boat going again after a few years of sitting in the back yard. Hard to believe but it having some motor issues. Did seafoam the gas a few years back and would start it up briefly about twice a year. Still way to much neglect on the motor.

    The motor is a 2000 25hp 4 stroke Honda.

So the motor does pop right off. Issue is it only runs on high idle and choked. Take the choke off or throttle back on it and it dies. Did put new gas in it and treated that with seafoam. Rant that through and its sat about a day. Put new plugs in today. New fuel filter tomorrow since Im not sure if its ever been changed. did get the air intake cover off and sprayed the heck out of the carbs with cleaner. Just trying to cover the easy stuff right now. Got a little improvement but still not anywhere near where it needs to be. Motor needs to be able to run all day at very low trolling speeds.

Im sure the carbs or where the fuel sprays in is all gummed up. No idea where or what to look for this. The motor has always ran fine so dont want to start trying to adjust the carb.

Anyone got any other ideas on what I could try? Thanks for any help with this.

Yep, jets in the carb are gummed up. Spray some more cleaner in there. Add a good amount of seafoam or other cleaner to the fuel tank making sure it is mixed well. Take the fitting off the hose on the engine end of the hose and using the primer bulb, pump out about a pint of fuel thru thru hose. Put the fitting back on the hose with a new clamp. That way you have treated fuel now in the hose as well as the tank.

Hook the hose back up to your motor and start the engine. Let it run even if you have to use the choke to keep it running. Try to run it for ten minutes or so. Shut it off and wait a day. Give the fuel cleaner thats in the fuel which is now sitting in the carb, time to do it work.

Tomorrow start it up again and repeat. If after a couple days of this it does not run better, then you may have to pull and disassemble the carb to get it clean.

Patience and a heavy mix of fuel cleaner is your freind.

Yep. that’s about what I’ve done so far. Been patiently working on everything else on the boat while waiting. Got the trolling motor going again. Fixed the broken trailer lights. Got the depth finder going again. Hard to believe that garmin 240 is still working after sitting outside for who knows how many years. Still have to pull a rotten seat and possible floor out of the boat. Found a rotten and broken bunk on the trailer while work on the lights. Glad I found that as Im sure it wouldnt have taken long for the bracket to poke through the hull.

Not sure if Im ready to tear into the carbs on this motor. Its three carbs. How heavy do I dare go on the stable. It said for motor cleaning 1 ounce to 5 gallons. Thats what I went.

Do yourself a favor and just disassemble/clean the carbs the correct way the first time. If you can do one you can do three. They are just linked together. Take one off at a time of number them so the order does not get mixed up.

I would not mess around with just spraying carb cleaner into the carb for a few days and hoping it will work…

X2^ take them apart and soak them according to the cleaners instructions. make sure every port is free flowing.

wow is that motor a pain to work on. 4hrs to pull the carbs, clean and put back together. Looks like I get to do it again tomorrow after work. Got a gas line leaking behind the third carb. All three come off to get at it. Two of the three jets or what ever they are called where corroded up. Think I would of been waiting forever for the stabile to clear that up. looks like a small filter between the fuel pump and low idle piping. Going to try to find one of those tomorrow. Sure glad i took plenty of pictures. Would of never figured out how the linkage went back together with out it.

This is the labor of my labor day.

Okay. Now Im thinking that filter in the low speed gas piping might actually be a check valve.

Back into it today. found a quicker way to pull the carbs off. Also found some small parts in the center of the carb that did not get cleaned yesterday.

This is my first carb cleaning on something this complicated. Have done a single carb on a push lawn motor. Anyone got any pointers or see anything ill missing Im all ears.

    Thanks.

To dark to get it all back together tonight. Should take about a hour tomorrow night and then get to test it out again. Got my hopes up.

I pluck and hold a strand of wire from a wire brush with a vise-grips. This wire is very thin and spring steel stiff and will get into the smallest orifices. Good luck.

lake test went well. Cant remember last time the motor ran this well. Purrs like a kitten. Boats pretty well ready to go. Do still need to get a bunk replaced, pull front seat out and figure out a new seat for up there, and maybe do something to the floor. Then again there is always something to do to a older boat.
