Power Drive not getting power

My Minn Kota power drive is not getting any power. Its a 24v 65# thrust. About 10 years old. Was working just fine until I had to pull the front batteries a bout a month ago. Not working since then. Checked the inline fuses near the batteries and they where okay. Batteries are good.

Not sure what else to look for. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

OK….it was working and then you did **something** with the batteries and now it doesn’t work? That’s where I’d start looking, at that battery hookup. Plus to minus and all that, make sure there’s 24 volts there.

Does the trolling motor have a built in charge indicator? My MK has a button you can push to see how the battery is doing. I doubt it’s very accurate but it does show if you’re getting power up to the motor or not. Basically you have to start on one end of the circuit or the other and see how far the power gets.

Finally most “electrical” problems turn out to be mechanical problems: connectors, switches, fuse holders, busted wires. Look at those things carefully.

Mine has that power button to. No lights coming on there. It usually beeps when the power cord is plugged in and that not happening either. On board charger does show the front batteries full charged and they are only two years old. Being a plumber and not a electrician Im sure its something I hooked up wrong but just cant figure it out. Have had the positives and negatives on a off a few times now and still no go.

    Mike,

I had a very similar problem not to long ago.

Make sure your power connections from the PD are coming off of the opposite terminals as the 24v jumper wire.

If your PD connections are on the same battery terminals, it doesn’t work. This is what happened in my case anyway.

    How about a breaker switch?

I lost power to mine and had a wire loose on the backside of power plug in on the boat.

    Battery connections should be

Positive on battery 1 to trolling motor or receptacle or breaker
Negative on battery 1 to positive on battery 2
Negative on battery 2 to trolling motor or receptacle or breaker.

I had a simialr problem a few yrs ago with my old Powerdrive after I changed the battery…In my case, the trolling motor terminals needed to be cleaned and were not making good contact to the battery. I know it sounds simple but try sanding them.

Not unheard of to get a bad battery either.

Think it ended up being a dead battery. Did get the motor going but the prop wont spin until its cranked up about half way. Even on full power it only running about half. Ill have to looking into the batteries today and see what is going on.

Mike, sounds like you are only getting 12 volts. (Power off one battery.)

I had what sounds like a very similar issue with my terrova on my last boat. Never seemed to have full power and when I pushed the button on the motor to show the charge, the lights were always dim even if it showed full power. Turned out I had a battery with a couple bad cells that was basically junk. New batteries, no more problem.

Witht he help of Jon J. we got this figured out today. Had the positives crossed and there was a breaker tripped on one of them. Should be good to go again.
