Stupid Question

Is there a way to tell the approximate depth that a crankbait will dive? I am not all that familiar with using them, as I don’t do much walleye. I know that when you buy a rapala, it tells you on the box the depth that it will dive, but others don’t. Is there a gerenal rule of thumb?

    Precision Trolling: The Trollers Bible

Good question actually… Best price I had found was walmart online.

Thanks for the info. What if I am not trolling? What if I am just casting from a boat or shore. How do I know just how far that thing is diving? Trial and error?

There’s always trial and error but you may sacrifice some lures this way. Not only is there a Precision Trolling guide, there’s a Precision Casting guide as well. I invested in both books over the winter and it’s been well worth it so far!

Another general rule is the bigger the plastic lip on the bait the deeper it will dive. Rapala also makes a little trolling/casting guide from thier lures I purchased mine from thier website, and then I seen the for sale at gander mountain, but they don’t always have them.

Precision trolling is really the best way to learn as much as possible about trolling with the least effort I have my book in the boat at all times, and with my line counter reel, it assures me the book is indeed dead on.

Ah and I think this was a great question

There is also a Precission Casting book too. Its like the Precission Tolling book but for casting. By the way Bud, there are no dumb questions here. We ALL learn by asking questions. Thanks for asking. Thanks, Bill

Thank for the info. Pick them up last night on my way home from school. Now if I can just find the time to actually read them. Thanks again.

The Precision Trolling book is the only way to go if you use various brands and styles of crankbaits but if you only run Rapalas, Rapala makes a smaller book that includes casting and trolling depth charts. It is the same depth charts from the Precision books (same guys made it) but a lot cheaper. Good luck out there!

I believe Precision has come out with a casting book as well. I have not seen it yet, but am sure I read about it a few months back.
