Considering going with lead core line on a couple of rigs.
    A few questions
Can I use my old Ambassador 5000 for a reel?
How much line do you think it would hold?
How about a rod, Heavy casting or med heavy?
How do you tie Mono to the lead core ? kind of knot?

If you are going to use Suffix 832 leadcore then use a small barrel swivel. If you don’t the line will twist causing the lead to break and poke through the dacron.

I’ve got two spools of 832 lead that were tied with barrel swivels and it’s still twisted and broken. I had to strip 3 full colors off both reels after only 1.5 days of fishing. I’m going back to regular suffix lead.

I have found that the 832 is junk as well i like the regular sufix and for the price its unbeatable

Yeah I really wish I hadn’t been told 832 was the greatest thing ever.

I just bought a 5000 series abu reel last spring; it’s working well. I’m using Suffix 832 12lb test on it and have been able to put 5 colors lead plus braided backing and it’s performed great. Have caught browns, pike, and walleye.

I would use a small swivel as mentioned. It will help keep your line twist down. I also use fireline as a leader, that way you can tell if your rig is running true. I used to use mono, but it lead to too darn many tangles, its hard to see/feel weeds or junk on there with 100 feet of line or better out. Sometimes you will probably want a mono leader though if the water is super clear a vanish type line.

For your rod, I like a slow medium action rod. You want something with a little give in it.

As for your 5000 reel? You could use it I think, but a linecounter is what I prefer.
