Looking at getting a new outboard for the boat. I’m sure this topic has been beat up in the past but wondering about anyone’s experience with these motors in the past year or two.

Reasoning? I get the feeling this topic is like a ford chevy topic.

What kind of boat? What size motor? What’s your style of fishing?

If you fish at all using your main motor I would say Yamaha. If your just looking to run and gun then either will get the job done. Etecs always seem to have a lower resale. If you plan on owning one out of warranty personally I would shy away from etec.

Ford,chev-I currently Merc, 250 PRO XS- would not hesitate to move to a 300 Yamaha-I have had to many friends that own etec’s to go there.
    Sorry!

I like Yamaha…. but agree with the Chevy vs Ford statement. I’d tend to make a decision at least partially based on the dealer I wanted to work with, and what they were comfortable with.

I talked to 3 different salesmen at a dealer in the Twin Cities that sells both. 3-0 for Yamaha.

Have owned 6 Yamaha 4 stokes over last 3 boats from the T-8 to my current F250 with T-9.9 and I have not had one single complaint or problem. Change engine and lower unit oil and they have all continued to run just like the day I bought it, year after year.

Till the late 90’s I wouldn’t concider anything but OMC. But switched to Yamaha on my current boat {115 & 9.9}. Couldn’t be happier. Liked the Honda motor but dealer placement were I travel favored Yamaha. Johnson would now be my forth or fifth choice. But if everyone liked the same thing life would be pretty boring.

Which ever motor you select (Yamaha!!) just remember to get up to the Croix and teach some old dogs a few new tricks for catching eyes

Cant teach ol dogs new tricks! Looking like its gonna be an etec the warranty at this point is the selling point. 5 year versus 3 years. I plan on upgrading in 5 years so it was a match made in heaven! I beleive all people have good and bad to say about each but the technology we have today I think it doesnt matter what you buy but rather the day of the week it was made! The motors are both very reputable and neck in neck in technology. Never heard anything bad about either of them. I have had a merc and a yamaha in the past so may just as well give evinrude a chance. thanks for all the input.

Just an FYI yamaha has a 5 year warranty package going on for the 4 strokes. Just in case that matters.
