Thinking about buying a “91” 40 hp. Johnson to replace my “83”35 hp. Evinrude. My Evinrude has ran flawlessly for 30 years now and I’m wondering if the “91” Johnson will be as reliable. The reason being the Johnson has electric start and t&t. Please give me your thoughts on this. Thanks guys.

That is the same as on my Mom’s boat. With all the problems they had on the VRO, we disconnected the oil pump and mixed gas/oil manually. Still runs great!

Did Johnson make this motor without VRO? This motor is not VRO and in cherry shape. Thanks Randy.

I had an ’89 Evy 110 with VRO that I ran for 22 years without a problem. Literally never did anything other than chnage plugs, change the lower unit oil and fog every year. Started on the first turn of the key every year.

On the down side it was truly a “gas hog”.

I stand corrected, ours is a 1990, not a 91. I’m not aware of the 2-cyl 40hp made in that time frame without the VRO. The VRO pumps were known for failing in that time period (late 80’s/early 90’s)
