ipilot – setting up a track before fishing

Just got an ipilot–no link. I am wondering if it is doable to deploy ipilot, set a track, and cruise around a structure slowly with gas motor at 4 to 5 mph, then push start to end…is that the way to have the unit follow a pre-set track so I can fish it? Somebody must have a plan on how this can be done without the link system.

Very do-able. Many (including myself) have done exactly that before we got the Link.

Thanks Wade. I just wanted to know if my steps are correct. And it sounds like it’ll fly. I have been scouting more and more with HB side imaging since I bought it a few years ago, but now I can lock that track too with the ipilot and not weave all over the place. Thanks again!

I was doing that last week on woman lake… I miss it already. I deploy it, raise it up out of the water to eliminate strain on equipment, hit record then drove around structure.

    Do it all the time.
In stronger wind, it is the only way to record the track without wandering all over the place trying to use the TM.

This may be a minor hi-jack of this thread but, my 80lb Terrova gets me a Max speed of 2 #mph on my Tuffy. I do not have a kicker…yet. but even with a kicker can one use the main motor/kicker to get up to trolling speed and then use the bow mounted TM with I pilot to steer or run a course? Tell me if this scenario would work, my desired trolling speed is 2 MPH, I bring my main motor up to 1.8 MPH, I then deploy the Terrova and engage cruise control to 2 MPH, then if desired engage route or set a direction. As a point of info my main motor is a 4 stroke merc with smartcraft and troll control. Thanks.

Yep. Awesome technique. I used to do it all the time. I hear Musky guys even set the kicker (or main) at 4.? MPH and then have the Terrova at 0.2-0.4 MPH higher and use the Terrova to steer.

Makes trolling awesome not being tied to the kicker.

Thanks, I will be trying this out trolling on Castle Rock this weekend.
