This is for mercury optimax guru’s, I Installed a smartcraft speedo last fall, bought direct w/wiring harness from mercury installed myself (pretty easy) every time I try to use it I get a message saying no tach found, Do I need a tach smartcraft gauge along with speedo for this to work?? 
Does the speedo you bought have the 3 buttons at the bottom of the gauge?
I’m curious, why did you go with the speedo, rather than the tach? The tach provides much more engine data.

Yes it has 3 buttons, I didn’t realize there was a difference between the 2 gauges…
From the SmartCraft owners guide SmartCraft owners guide you can see the different readouts that each gauge can provide, depending on engine and available sensors.
I’ve never been involved with e Speedo-only install, but it doesn’t surprise me that it’s looking for the tach, to support other features.
