Deep Cycle vs. Starter Battery

I apologize in advance if this topic has already been covered…I am looking to put a new battery in my boat. However, due to weight, I would like to have only 1 battery on board to run electronics, trolling motor and start my newer 15 HP Merc. I would think the best battery for this would be a deep cycle as the motor requires very few cranking amps to start. Any thoughts on this?

Group 31 deep cycle, no less. A battery gauge is a must, you don’t want to drain it with the TM and have to paddle home!

You are correct. deep cycle for you.

They make 24 27 and 31 group sizes.

Get as large as you can fit.

And a pull rope for your motor, don’t forget that if you use that set-up!

    Thanks for the info guys!

I use the trolling motor quite sparingly so it shouldn’t be a problem draining the battery…come to think of it, my 15 HP also has a pull start on it so if I drain the batt, no problem.

The newer 30hp mercs and smaller that have electric start also have recoils for manual starting. Even my 25 HP jet with electronic ignition and EFI has a system where the first pull energizes the system electronics and the second pull starts the motor with or without battery. I would get a 31 series AGM battery, zero maintenance, no venting required, non spillable, almost no self discharge when in storage. I would also get a small permanently hooked up battery charger / maintainer for peak battery health.

I had a deep cycle on my first 16′ A1.
I mounted a fuse block right to the battery screw post.
I ran my old 36 lb TM
    Humminbird
and an aerator in a cooler for a live well.
Battery held up real well for that.
I had the battery and cooler
mid ship to balance the weight.
