I have a question for anyone who has done some boat repairs. My wife and I are fixing a 1973 Yar-Craft boat, it’s actually a total re-do! The floor was rotted out and we want to repaint the boat as well. We are doing our homework but one questions we are scratching our heads on, should we repair and paint the bottom of the boat before or after we put in the new flooring? Any good advice would be appreciated.

Do the inside first. If the floor needs replacing look hard at the stringers and the transom. They likely need replacing also. That’s a big job and you may decide it’s more than you are willing to invest in time and money. I love my 1996 Yarcraft!

What type of repairs are needed for the boat hull bottom? Will you or someone need access to the inside? If so, do the bottom first before installing a new floor.

Either way, yes you first need to decide on the total repairs and total cost before starting any portion of the job.

Check out fiberglassics.com these guys are into old fiberglass boats and have a section dedicated to refurb projects. You can see how it’s done and what you’re getting yourself into possibly.
