Going to look at a boat with a 2004 Yami 50hp 2-stroke. How can I tell if this is an EFI motor?

    Thanks!

Ask to take the cowling off and look to see if it has a carb or not.

    I don’t think they made a 2stroke 50hp EFI motor that year. I’m guessing it’s a carb’ed motor.

You should be able to look under the hood and see carburetors or fuel injectors.

Plus they usually badge it as such on the hood if its EFI.

It is carbureted. The 40-50 are the same motors. I have a 40 that was used on a guide boat for 6 yrs and I’ve put a high amount of hrs on in the last 5 years. I’ve done nothing but add gas and oil. One set of plugs a year.

Do you run yours in the winter? If so, how does it start?

    Thanks,

I have a 50 2-cycle(2005).Runs perfect in cold weather.2004 and up they used brass plugs to cover the idle jet screws. It helps a lot if you can turn out the idle screws another 1/8 turn.I have 500 hrs on mine,no problems so far.Starts just as good at 25F or 90F.

The only motors Yamaha made with EFI or DFI(2-cycle)are 150HP and up.

Mine is a pull start and has always started within 3 pulls no matter how cold it was. Same goes for the first time out over the winter. Looking back at last year a rough guess is a minimum of 256 hrs. Which is likely substantially more. I average about 28gal of gas to 1qt of oil and went through 8 gal of oil last year. Typically cruising right around 3.5 gph.
