Hey guys looking for your opinions on these? My mister twister took a crap last year. I read some of the reviews on cabelas and there not the best. Thanks for the help

I use the rapala proguide deluxe. my only compliant is the crappy case they want you to stuff the thing in after use. Use a sealed tupperware/plastic case instead. like everything, the better you take care of it the longer it will last. I buy a new set of blades each year ($7.99). still on my first one (this is starting year 4). I don’t get to fish nearly enough though.

the mister twisters are very durable though (more then the rapala in my opinion). but I like how the rapala fits in my hand.

The Rapala electric is OK at best – mostly thought I would post because the Rapala Li-Ion is the worst fishing equipment purchase I’ve ever made – even after exchanging it 6 times. Finally the cashier at the counter looked at me and said – do you really want to exchange another one – isn’t it time to just refund your purchase? She was right.

Problem I had with Rapala – the blade locking device in the knife – the same problem every time. The blades won’t lock in, they won’t unlock, neither of which matter much because when you get a knife that will lock in the blades, they lock with some type of plastic, that breaks consitently within the first 6 fish you clean – resulting in the knives falling out of a running knife.

I was really excited to have the Li-Ion battery knife. Such a poor taste in my mouth from the Rapala attempt, I don’t know that I’m ever going to buy another Rapala powered knife in my lifetime.

On a better note – I ponied up the extra dollars for a Berkley Li-Ion knife – and while I have not used it much yet (@20 fish), it is still working. Time will tell.

Not a fan of the rapala ones. The few I tried were on the slow side and seemed to bog down when cutting a big fish.

I have used two american angler ones (12/120 and rechargeable) and they are by far the best I have used. Super fast, don’t bog down, and the blades are wicked sharp (shark blades). I have the older freedom fillet battery one and it is what I reach for first. It works great and I can do roughly 50 panfish or 15 or 20 walleye on one charge.

I’ve used both and the Mister Twister is probably the better value. The comment about the crappy case is definitely true for Rapala. I have a Rapala I received as a gift that is the plug in only version. It’s ok. I have noticed it’s way better than my buddy’s Rapala that’s the version you can also run off a battery etc. For some reason, his Rapala has lower RPMs etc., making it a pretty crappy fillet knife. Mine, which can only be used by plugging in seems to work better. But, overall, Mister Twister I think is at least as good and usually cheaper.

I purchased a new Rap Lithium Ion a couple months ago…I came over from the Mr. Twister… So far this new 2013 has been excellent. I filleted several fish for two days at Everts in March w/o recharging. The upswept serrated SS blade is razor sharp. No locking/unlocking problems that Burr encountered (maybe they addressed that from 2012?)
One tip I have always done…after cleaning the blades rub a little cooking oil on the insides of the locking blades…they will run much faster and last longer.

I have been researching this also and from the reviews I have read the Mister Twister is the best buy and quality out there IMO. Most say the Mister Twister blades stay sharper much longer and is also faster with a better motor. Also came across alot of reviews that said the rapala and others over heated much faster than the Mister Twister and that is what is hard on them. Also the button that releases the blades on the rapala is on top right where you put your thumb while using it some complained of the blades releasing on them . The price of the Mister Twister also is close to half the price of others from what I found. I am going with Mister Twister. After all it is the #1 rated electric fillet knife.

I will probably also go with the mister twister. I liked the idea of being cordless though

    By who?

Every forum I have been on, I have never heard the majority say to go mister twister. In fact, when I was researching for my first one I found more negative reviews on the green/yellow mister twister than any other brand. Most said rapala lithium or american angler corded.

By fisherman. The only real negative reviews I found on mister twister was the coiled cord was to short. I have a american angler and it is not near as good as mister twister alot less rpm speed. The only american angler that had good reviews was a MT3 model which is no longer made that don’y say much for american angler. I might be wrong but I believe Mister Twister electric knives have been around longer than any of them and have not changed much if any and that says alot right there IMO. If it’s not broke don’t fix it.

From what I found out the biggest difference was the blades. I think it is geared towards saltwater fish. The reviews I could find did not think the motor had anymore power or speed. Maybe some internal parts are different.

Mr Twister hands down. I have cut the twisted cord off and substituted about 8 feet of straight cord. It is now the best electric out there IMHO. I’ve done this to all my Mr Twister knives.

X2 Good idea do you just leave a tag end and splice it?

Kept the straight portion of wire coming out of the knife and the plug. For less that $10 I did two knives with enough wire that I didn’t need an extension cord. Nothing fancy, but works great.

The freshwater are geared towards freshwater fish.. the “shark blades” are thin profile slim blades made for panfish. They are by far the sharpest out of any electric knife I have ever seen. My american anglers (both of them) are 2-3 times faster than the green/yellow mister twisters I have seen used in the fish houses.

Just the other day I took the side off a 28″ northern in about 4 seconds with my AA cordless. Last week I cleaned a 6″ bluegill that swallowed the hook and I kept it to see if I could get any meat off. The slim shark blade got me more meat than I expected to, enough to make it edible.

So in other words the piranh might be a good knife for cleaning crappie and whitebass?

Any knife with good speed and thin blades will be fine for crappie and whites. Thin blade is the key. Some call them slim blades, some call them panfish, and AA calls them shark blades.

    This is what I do
8″ Slim- panfish, trout, and white bass
    10″ Slim- big trout
8″ standard- Bass, bigger walleye/sauger, and pike
10″ standard- big pike/flathead that are accidental deaths.

The two 10″ers don’t get used much.

The piranha is made by Mister Twister and the blade is about the the same as the fisherman except it is 9″ blade. The shark blade is made by American angler and I think it is narrower not sure how much thinner if any. I use the regular 7″ blade never had any problems. I like the mister twister blades better than any. Google mister twister reviews and find this review by this guy learntocatchcatfish.com claims the mister twister blades best out there. He compares a few brands.
