Do you cinch it up tight or leave it a hair loose? What do you guys do?

Wrench tight. I don’t force it beyond tight because I don’t want to put a bunch of torque on the shaft.

There will be a torque spec in the owners manual. Typically around 50-60 lbs.

Torque it to the motor spec and if the cotter key hole isn’t lined up with one of the slots in the nut, tighten it until it does. That’s what I do on my Yamaha per the motor manual.

Yea maybe should’ve looked in there first but I got answers from all of you before I would’ve looked in the manual.

X3, and also agree that if the cotter key hole doesn’t line up, nudge it tighter to line it up. Most have a thrush washer, so don’t back it off. that’ll have the prop ‘banging’ back and forth and cause more wear….

What type of engine? Mercury`s Flo Tourqe hubs they recommend 100 ft lbs. Running stainless to loose will cause a rattle and wear on the splines.

It would be for the Suzuki. I haven’t had a chance to check the manual yet.
