Dave, just drive on over to my house. What’s a few hundred miles between friends??
I got the PM too… All you’re going to get on the river is the outline. And, because river data is so inconsistent and the river changes, there will be times (maybe many times) that it shows you on land. On my Lowrance basemap I get the same thing on smaller lakes, but when I use the Navionics chip it keeps me located on the water like you’d want it to do. Now, on Mille Lacs or other lakes that are actually listed on the CD you should not have this problem. On the river you should still be able to mark your waypoints/icons, etc and follow your plotter trail, even if it shows you’re on land. As long as it replicates your trail and can accurately return you to your marked locations it should serve as a helpful tool.
When the Garmin support emailed you and said there is no river info that is not correct. But it is true that the river detail is not going to be nearly as good as the detail for listed lakes. I believe I will be seeing you at Mille Lacs later this year and and love to take a look at this product on the big pond. It’s not going to compare to the 1′ contours but I’m hoping it will be a big help in locating structure on the water.
Lastly, you might be better off taking the time to sit on hold and talk to a Garmin tech about it. Maybe they have some tricks we don’t know about??? Let me know if there’s anything you need from me. Be glad to help.
