I started out with a 997 back in 08 on the console. In 2010 I bought a 1197 and moved the 997 to the Terrova. On the first trip, I could see the value of side imaging on the bow, but was quickly unhappy with the 997 up front, because of the viewing distance while pitching jigs, so I moved the 1197 to the bow and put the 997 back on the console, where the viewing distance was closer and more comfortable. That is the way it has remained until January, when I got an 1198 to run the IPilot Link. I now have 11xx in both places. I will never be without side imaging on the bow….ever.
My suggestion for anyone contemplating this setup, it to get very good with your console unit at reading what it is telling you at optimum scanning speeds and direction, because side imaging up front is a different animal. You don’t have to be going 3 mph to see fish. You don’t have to be going in a straight line to see fish. The unit shows you exactly what’s there, if your capable of interpreting what it’s showing you.
If you need a good image in order to interpret what your unit is showing you, side imaging on the bow may not be for you. If you are able to figure out slow motion and turning images, it’s a game changer.
