Looking at new boat having trouble deciding on what motor to go with. Was leaning towards Yamaha 50hp Tiller but also considering Honda and E-TEC. Any opinions pros or cons? Anyone have experience with both? 50hp-60hp Tiller

I’ve got a 40 Honda tiller I bought new in 2001 and have had no problems at all with it. I always ad Sta-Bil or Sea Foam to every tank of gas.
StefanPosts: 6March 31, 2013 at 1:32 pm #1157796I have had zero problems with my Honda 4 stroke. Honestly don’t think you can go wrong with either of them though.

March 31, 2013 at 2:24 pm #1157810I have a yamaha 75 HP tiller, absolutely love this motor never had one problem. One thing to keep in mind is when your out of town honda dealers get scarce in the north country , could possibly ruin a good trip.

March 31, 2013 at 4:18 pm #1157846Been researching Yamaha and Honda to go with a boat purchase myself. Both are good engines and have a good track record. I agree with the others that you should take a look a who can service Honda. At least in my area there are maybe two. For Yamaha there are about 10.
One note that a dealer who sells both made to me recently is that Honda makes a good outboard but have not invested much on upgrading their technology while Yamaha has been on top of tech changes. Take that for what it is worth. I should have asked him to give me an example but the 8 year old wanted to climb in more boats.
I was also told that Yamaha has better marketing so that is one reason there are more out there. Needless to say. Honda or Yamaha you can’t go wrong.
No opinion on Etec. Not familiar with them and personally I will be putting a Yammie on my next rig.
I would also recommend doing some searches in IDO. There have been some good discussions on this topic.

Thanks AJ. Just got new phone with the bells and whistles so I can keep up with IDO.Hooked up at home and work is just not enough. This way I can still keep connected when I am in my recliner in front of the boob tube.
March 31, 2013 at 6:17 pm #1157878I have had this 1997 4 stroke Yamaha 50 tiller since 2010. Father in law had it befor me, and he bought it from someone else. There are only two things that come to mind that wre problems. 1 when it was cold out, after it ran awhile and shut off it would not start . Dealer adjusted choke linkage, good to go. 2. put stable in gas over winter would not run good at all. Added Seafoam problem went away. Dealer said It was the Stable forming a film ontop of the gas and getting that film sucked into fuel lines use sea form on all small engins from then on. Yamaha will be my choice for the next motor.

March 31, 2013 at 6:48 pm #1157883I have a 2001 Yammy 115 4 stroke….many hours on this motor…absolutely NADA PROBLEMOS…just start it and forget it…No problems last week in very cold weather!
whofanPosts: 30April 1, 2013 at 11:31 pm #1158244Love my 115 ETEC but for a tiller in my area with a Honda dealer close by I`d be hard pressed not to go with a Honda.
I`d have to try out the small ETEC first before I`d recommend it. The ETECs are big twin cylinders in the 40-60 hp models. My guess not so smooth.April 2, 2013 at 7:11 am #1158288Truly comparing apples to peaches to oranges.
All delicious and good for you too.
After selling my Yamaha and buying an Etec, I can say that the 4stroke was more quiet and the Etec has more torque. Both idle and run fine with a slight nod to Etec starting when cold. Very slight.
Friends with Hondas love them, but as another poster mentioned, they don’t seem as eager to be on the edge of technology lately. Not that their product needs to change much cuz it is pretty darn reliable as it is.My opinion:
Yammie is safest bet overall. But Etec is a great 2stroke option.Wander thru the orchard and taste the fruits from different trees. Fall in love with the fruit that pleases you the most.
