I talked to my grandparents in Texas this afternoon and they were on their way to drop their 1yr old etec back off for the 3rd oil tank this winter. They originally had a 30hp Johnson 4 stroke that was nothing but problems with the lower unit and water pump. I know a buddy bought one of the first yr 50hp etec and had one tank replaced under warranty and motor mount. Other then that it has been a solid motor. I’m not sure if they have the worst authorized dealer down there or if they are both just problematic motors. Both were purchased new at the same dealer.
I know 30 HP isn’t a high demand place in the market but wondering if any of you own one and have any issues? Both companies have done their best to resolve issues with both motors but down time has been a week or two each time.

My boss has had an Etec 30 on a 16′ Lund Laker for a year and loves it. I have other friends with a 75 and 115 who’ve had problems. Not major but too much downtime and expense for me. I fished alongside the friend’s 30 last summer for 3 days with my 50 Honda on a Crestliner Canadian 1650 and we consumed the same amount of fuel within a pint while traveling the same distance.

I run 30 hp etec even I plan to do a lot of trolling. The crouch formula gives me a top speed of 20-24, depending on load, which is fine by me. i like to cruise around 12-15 to take in the view and the boat planes easily at that speed.
