I have a 98 merc 175 EFI. At about3500-5000 RPMs it sometimes cuts in and out. It never shuts down. The motor has always been a hard starting pig but this is new. Any ideas of what to look for would be appreciated.

Fuel filter or fuel line problem??? That is how a vehicle I had acted.

Leaky gasket letting water on a plug or cylinder??? Thats how a 40 HP I had acted.

I’ve had a 175 and 200. They do start hard. Especially in the cold.

Now I’m thinking it is electrical. I emptied the water fuel separator, changed the plugs and inspected and cleaned the wires. Took it out for a test drive and the only thing that happened was the when I trimmed the motor the RPMs dropped by 200. Then when I let go of the button the RPMs went back to normal. The battery is brand new. I did not get anymore hiccups yesterday. I’m going to fish the Evinrude classic on leech next week otherwise I would not worry about the transient problem.
