Looking for that Versatile Rod

I am looking to add a new rod to my arsenal. I would like this rod to double as a bottom bouncing rod for walleyes and have it double as a cranking rod for both bass and walleyes. I found three different models of the St. Croix Legend Xtreme that may fit the bill:

    – Legend Xtreme XC610MXF
    – Legend Xtreme XC72MHM
    – Legend Xtreme XC72MM

I feel that the 7’2″ Med. Heavy with a Moderate Action would probably be the best option, but how would the other two stack up as a comparison? I already own a Shimano 6’6″ Med. with a Fast action, but was looking for a rod that would be a bit more versatile.

Thanks for all the help guys!

How much weight are you going to use on the bottom bouncer?

I would agree with you in that the 72MHM is your best choice of the three. The MM is likely too soft and the 610MXF is too fast and won’t like being loaded up with the bottom bouncer. The moderate action of the 72MHM will likely outcast the 610MXF too. I was told by St Croix the 610MXF is great for lighter shakey head jig presentations. Soft tip with alot of backbone.

    Hopefully Gursky will chime in.

Need some more info. How big of weight do you plan on pulling? What type of “casting” do you plan to do with it for walleye and bass?

If you are fishing 3oz+ I’d say the MHM would be your best bet. Anything under 3oz go for the MM.

If the “casting” part is throwing deep divers for walleye/bass then you might want the MM, the M tip will help keep the fish buttoned up with the trebles.

I will probably be using 1.5-3 oz bouncers and I was hoping to throw some of the DT’s (10s, 14s, 16s), Salmo Hornets, Rattle Baits, and I would like to try and throw Shad and Jerk Bait style baits. I realize that the Shad and Jerkbaits may be a little light for the 7’2″MHM.

You should be alright with the 72MHM, might be a little much for trolling 1.5 bouncers.

Would be very difficult to throw a jerkbait on it, but it can be done. I like a maximum of a 6’6 for jerks. 6’4MLF is my favorite for jerks.

Shad raps will be alright, but you wont get as much casting distance as you would with a Med.

Are the 3 oz bouncers and the bigger sized DT’s to much for the 7’2″MM or would it be a pretty solid setup?

Thanks again for all your input guys!

IMO 3oz is the top limit of a 7MM rod. It is not ideal, but it works.

The DT14+ would IMO need to be thrown on a MHM.

I’d say go for the 7’2MHM and you will be alright. I’d rather be overpowered than underpowered.

Thanks guys! I think I’m gonna go ahead and pull the trigger on the MHM. It just seems to fit the techniques I’m looking to apply!

Good choice with those weights…The 2013 XS610MXF is probably the fastest extreme I have ever fished. Considerably stiffer in the top end than the XS70MF. I had a hard time casting any jig under 1/4oz last fall on P-4. A 3/16 hardly loaded the rod.
That IMHO is a excellent Bass spinning rod or Eyes if you are casting heavier stuff like 1/4oz jigs/K Grubs or Moxies.
