Looking for a good anchor for an 18ft boat. Wind and current, what is working for you?

Richter worked excellent for my 18 last weekend.

I bought the Chene anchor over the winter. Picked up the one for 26-30 foot boats shown here:

    Chene Anchor

I have a 17.5 foot Yar-Craft and that anchor did not hold even in a slight chop with all 100 feet of rope out! It would walk 50-100 feet, hook up for a minute, then let loose again. Did that for a ¼ mile and then I broke out old reliable…28 lb Navy Anchor!

The Chene anchor I bought is about half the size of the Water Spike and does not have the side arms to keep it from rolling over. Plus, it is not heavy duty like the WS. Guess that’s what I get for trying to save a buck….

Derek, how much do those Richtor Anchors weigh? My back is killing me!

They come in 18 or 25. I’m using the 25.

I second that — The Richters hold like you are tied off to a bridge piling. Awesome.

All I have is a 28lb navy. It always works so I have no need to spend money on a newer type.

I’m surprised at that Jon. I use a similar, cheaper model that Gander sells and have great luck with it in both the river and lakes. I was anchored in a sandy bottom last weekend on Saturday night off a reef and she never slipped once. One thing I noticed is that my anchor has much larger tines for digging into the bottom. Plus it’s very light, without the 4 ft of chain.

This is a $35.00 anchor, but I can’t for the life of me remember who makes it. I got Crossin’ one too. I wonder if he could chime in on his results with that model?

I should have researched this site better. I too bought a Chene anchor over the winter. Although with a good wind or currant it seems to hold if I let enought line out. But because I use it mostly on LAKE St Croix, there are times when there isn’t enough wind to get it to bite. I don’t have a chain on it either…Steve, the river anchor I bought from you workes great on those days.
For lake fishing (and it appears river)…Chene is not the way to go…

i use a waterspike with a 10lb mushroom anchor 6ft up from the waterspike. the mushroom is attached to 2ft of chain. i have a 110ft rope. this setup has worked in my 16ft angler and my 24ft searay. i got the mushroom anchor off the reef at doe island, try swimming up in about 6ft of water with a 10lb anchor. it took a couple of tries, but i figured it out, tied a rope to it while on the bottom!

Just go with the water spike anchor to start with and take care of all your anchoring needs for the future right now. Beleive me……… I learned this the hard way . I think Wade at Jolly Ann sells them as well.

Hey Waterfowler, you and I have the Waterspike which is quite a bit better than the Chene in my opnion. I never slipped with mine either. I also have a 20lb navy anchor that works good as long as it has something on the bottom to grab it.

I seen a very nice rope reel at Wallyworld in the electrical dept. It was for and extension cord but it will work as an anchor rope reel. !!

Steve Plantz had one in his photo…I think. You can get one at Menards, Fleet Farm ect. Look in the electrical dept. I have one for my charger cord, but don’t recall the price.

It’s sweet. Added a few things like hour meter and 12V outlet for gps and spotlight. Haven’t placed the rod holders yet. Waiting to figure out exactly where I want them. I do need to move the axle as my tongue weight is a little too much for my old van. Been busy but we’ll have to see what we can work out for a get together. Coaching my sons baseball team again but will have time to wet a line.
