Anybody got anything bad or good to say about the Etec? I’m considering a 150 and hear good things, but know of nobody using them. Can it troll down without fouling plugs?

What is service history or more importantly reliability. Am I better off with an Optimax, Verado, or 4 stroke Yammie?

I hear emissions are as close to 4 stroke as you can get. What about power, smoke, starting, stink.

Any maintenance tricks for this unit?

    I just don’t know.

I have heard that there earlier E-Techs where bad with a lot of problems but they have fixed that by now. I personally would go with the Suzuki 140HP 4 stroke. It is very fuel efficient and costs a good amount less that a Yammie 4 Stroke.

I have a 2010 150 Etec. Have had absolutely no problems with it. Starts like a champ, have never even had to use the high idle for warmup. No smoke compared to other 2 stroke motors I’ve had. I have it on an 18 foot Crestliner Sportfish will do right around 52 mph. Have heard that the older Etec’s had some issue also. Mine runs awesome. Just had the 3 year checkup cost me right around 200. The winterizing is very easy also. Good Luck.

I had a 2008 150 on my previous boat. For some reason, I was snake bit with starters. I was on my 4th starter when I sold the boat last summer. Other than that, was a great motor. Great hole shot, decent on gas, super easy to winterize. I have a yamaha 225 off-shore on my current boat and miss the hole shot of my e-tec, but still really like my yamaha.

Not sure about other motors but Evinrude shops can run computer readouts on Etec’s. It might be worth having this done on a used motor. I run an 2005 225 Etec and have only replaced one injector. Mine has been developing a fuel issue, but after 7 yrs starting to have issues can be expected.

Tell your mec to have an extra lower unit on hand…

i would definitely have a history check done on that motor. Also you need to keep in mind the very costly oil you need to run in that engine and yes they do use it more then ya think. The four stroke motors have come along ways. in power and performance. The dealer I go thru has nothing but praise for that 140 Suzuki mentioned earlier. Good luck

I have 2010 ETEC. Yes the oil is pricey, but I use a lot lot les, comes out about equal. I have had no problems and the performance is awesome. If I had to get another motor it would be the etec, hands down.

I agree the oil is spendy, but again use a lot less than my Mercury ever did. Not to say I didn’t like my Mercury. My Etec has out done my expectations.

I just bought a 115 Etec last summer and I was blown away with the performance and quiet smooth idol.
It drank oil for the first few hours then it let up on consumption.
The xd100 is close to $50 per gallon but you don`t do oil changes.
I see no reason to consider a four stroke over the new DI two strokes.
The Etec did have a bad run on injecters around the 2007 year.
I did some research and I am happy so far with my purchase.
The Etec has none of the old two stroke inconveniences.
The Optimax is also a good motor.

The reason you go through a lot of oil at first is it double oils for the first I believe 30 hours for break in. Other then that there is no break in rules run it hard out of the box.

Can you confirm the double oiling duration? Is it 30, 40, or 50 hours?

I think it`s more like a 5-10 hour double oiling.

My 115 has 20 hours on it and after the first gallon or two the oil use was much better.

The Etec is set by the factory to run at 50:1.

It will how ever use more oil under hard acceleration.

50:1 is the set point but it`s also variable.

You can elect to have it set by the dealer to run 100:1 but you have to use XD100 oil only.

Most people use the xd 100 at 50:1.

Xd 100 is the best oil you can run. You can go to XD 50 a wee bit cheaper. You can even run TCW3 but not recomended.

I love my absolutely love yammie 150, awesome motor! If you are planing on keeping the boat for a while I would strongly urge you to consider looking at one…

    Just my two cents
