James, The fl-20 units and the FL-22 units all use the same light
wheels. The LED’s are pretty much the same, with the exception of the
early model FL-20’s. Even side by side, they are pretty much the same.
It is possible to get the FL-20 units back to original brightness.
Here’s the How To: Problems with Dim Lights
————————
Most likely, your light intensity problem is from the accumulation of
brush dust on the inside of the unit. You should be able to clean this
yourself.
For the FL-8 and FL-18 units. Remove the two screws from the back cover,
unplug the power and transducer jacks from the PC board, and remove the
back cover. Next, remove the control knobs from the front of the case
by loosening the Allen set screw on each knob (Allen size is 1.5 MM).
Remove the four screws that hold the PC board in place and remove the
board.
For the FL-12 and FL-20 units. Remove the 4 screws on the back cover.
Remove the retainer nuts on the power jack and transducer jack
connectors. Next, remove the control knobs from the front case by
loosening the Allen set screw on each knob. (Allen size is 1.5 MM)
Remove the front case and then remove the 3 screws holding the PC board
in place and remove the board.
Using compressed air, blow out all of the brush dust from in and around
the wheel assembly and wash the front case, inside and out, with soap
and water.
To clean the brush contacts (slip rings), make a tool by taping a small
piece of fine sandpaper (400 grit) to the end of a thin popsicle type
stick. Connect the rear case power jack to the PC board. Be careful not
to touch the motor with the wiring or the motor will short out and be
damaged. Turn the unit on. Be careful of the spinning wheel! Insert the
tool you made between the board and the spinning wheel. For this, it is
best to put the board in a position with the switches to the bottom
(towards the table) and work from the top. Be careful not to touch/bend
the brush springs with the tool. Just clean the three brass rings until
they are shinny. Run the unit for at least 30 minutes at room
temperature to reseat the brushes. This should increase your light
intensity to where it was when the unit was new. If this does not bring
the light intensity back to where you believe it should be, it may be
best to send the unit in for evaluation/repair. Thanks
