Ok guys what are the best boat batteries for the buck. I am not trying to brake the bank since i am a collage student lol but what the best i can get for my buck. Or should i spend good money on the best ones right away? Are used ones ok or should i stay away from them and do only new? Are onboard charges worth the investment or not really. Do i need a starting battery and deep cycle one for the trolling motor? Thanks for any help

I would suggest a separate battery for the engine starting battery and the electronics. I would suggest new if you can afford it.

Then you would need an additional battery (if your trolling motor is 12 volt) or batteries (if your trolling motor is 24 or 36 volt). I have had pretty good luck with Exide deep cycle or dual purpose marine batteries in the group 27 size. They are fairly economical. I think I got mine from Menards.

The new on board chargers are also an excellent investment. Many have a charge monitor to so that you can simply plug them in and they will charge and maintain your batteries between uses.

It can all get pretty expensive and no battery will last forever. But having decent properly charged batteries can be worth their weight in gold on the water.

Battery maintenance is key to the life of any battery. So, I would highly recommend a quality on board charging system. If you need more than a 12 volt system for your trolling motor, make sure they are a matched set. Meaning same size, age, brand, ect. Otherwise you will never realize the benefit of the stronger battery.

Make sure you get a battery big enough for your main engine. Look up the recommended cold cranking amps for your engine.

Sears Die Hard Platinum Marine batteries are hard to beat considering their specifications, price, and 3 year warranty. The 31n series is a beast of a battery.
