I have a standard camera now that is weather resisitant, not weather proof. I have been known to be a little rough on my equipment, If I buy one of these it certainly won’t be a wallflower, I still like thumbing through pictures, you must still be able to develope pictures if you chose?

Pretty much every camera out there today does an excellent job. One feature I like is the ability to take audio/video shots. Another feature I have seen on some of the newer cameras is an infra red light that is very useful when taking photos at night.

Be prepared to spend some extra money on an extra memory chip/card. They usually don’t have enough out of the box.

I would consider that night shot capability a necessity for anyone that fishes up to dusk or into the night. The Sony line of cameras has the best infrared “frame fill” feature out there that I know of…. I think its standard on all the cybershot cameras. It makes framing the subject very easy in complete darkness and the photos retain quite a bit of color and depth.

I have that infared on my new Sony. It works good for making the camera take a picture, but it isnt enough light to see your object so your kinda still “shooting in the dark” I havent used it much yet but I will keep experimenting. Any ideas James?

Hmmm.. not familiar with your specific camera but the infrared on my sony is very bright. I can easily see the location of the subject and get the framing just right without any hassling around.

Scroll through your menu settings and set it to the night photo setting. It looks like a little half moon. Or it does on my camera. I can remove that setting to disable the infrared so this might be the source of your issue.

I feel that the technology of the smaller form factor digital cameras is still at least a year away from where I would concider buying one.
Mainly due to the shutter release delay. When I push the button I want a camera to take the picture then. Not after it thinks about it for awhile.
The larger body digitals like a Canon Rebel doesn’t seem to have this problem. But until the smaller cameras are sped up dramaticly they will continue to drive me nuts. Just try to frame a pic of a moving object with a camera that has a noticable shutter delay.
Good results will be pure luck.

Yup… I know what you’re saying. There is a bit of a delay, not much but it is there, with most of the digis. I would NOT want to be in the position of needing to take a photo of a subject in action but for fish photos, etc., it’s not even a consideration in my book. Or I’ve never had a problem with it I can recall.

But there is no doubt, everything keeps getting better and better with these digi cameras. I couldn’t stand the thought of having to actually develope film after experiencing the convenience of digi photography.

Check out the site Derek Johnston left from Rivereyes. I picked a Pentex 33WR and so far it is just great. My first digital camera and my first one over 25-30$. Camera is water resistance to 3ft 4X digital zoom and cost about $235. Check a company CentralDigital.com for cost.
