This is a motor my buddy Jake recently acquired and it runs like a champ. Starts right up, takes off. But….I’m not sure of the year or many details of it at all. I’m guessing it’s mid-60s. The numbers on the tag are 18802m-e10349.

The main question we have is if it’s air cooled, or if we have an impeller stuck and it’s water cooled. Either way, we have no water coming out anywhere. I’m led to believe it’s water cooled. Any help with that especially is appreciated, but any info you have will be welcome. Thanks in advance–

I am pretty sure all OMC’s from that vintage were water cooled (vs. air cooled)…I would srart by replacing the impeller (water pump) and see if that is the reason why it is not pumping water. As a general rule, it should be replaced every 3 to 5 yrs. Even if it hasn’t run in a while it should still be replaced as the impeller can age and deterioate from just sitting.

Best not to run it without it pumping water as the powerhead can overheat and cause permanent damage.

Ya, we’ve been real careful to run it just in case it is water cooled, and I was thinking it was.

There isn’t an indicator stream outlet that I can find, so I’m guessing the water exits thru the top exhaust outlet? I’m thinking it’ll be a good spring project. Thanks for the info.

    Water cooled.
If it were air you would see cooling fins that are exposed to the air. That motor has a full cowling.

Good point. Now that you mention that, I did have an air cooled outboard 15 years ago and remember seeing the fins exposed to the outside air.

Awesome video, thank you. I really need to spend more time on youtube it seems. I’d say the one out in my garage runs better than the one in that video!

That’s a 1968 according to the model #. Really simple motors to work on. You can get an exploded parts diagram of the lower unit at Evinrude’s website: Shop Evinrude

    Click parts>1968>18>Model #>Gearcase group

    New impeller is $19.96

Very cool, thanks for that link. I’ll definitely check that out.
