Has anyone gotten away from buying the manufactures two stroke oil with good results?
I saw that a gallon of Lubamatic or West Marine TCW-3 oil is running about $7-$8 v.s my brand oil for $22.

I’m still filling my gallon jug at Starks Sports Shop for around $10 or $12…It is the Merc oil TCW-3

I stick with the manufactures two stroke oil, my motor is to big of an investment to risk taking a chance on oil that the manufacture does not recommend.

I use the Shipmate oil from Mills Fleet farm and have not had a problem for the last 1 1/2 years. This stuff is half the price of the Yamaha and Merc Brands.

Wow, High pressure even.. Like Steve, I have always run the Manuf oil. If these gas prices get higher, I may have to experiment with other brands. Thanks for the info.

I have been using amsoil for quite a while. $18-20 per gallon. Before that I was using injex with good results.

I have been running the manufactures oil in my Johnson 90 hp. Motors are way toooo expensive to replace to take a chance with cheap oil. To cut cost I take my empty gal oil container to Smittys Marine in Lake City and he fills it up from a 55 gal drum of the manufactures oil for several dollars less than the reg. new gal jug price. But you have to bring in a Johnson or Evinrude jug. Great oil at a better price.
    Thanks, Bill

The subject of cheap vs expensive oils has come up before. I took a fair amount of time to look into it and post some info:

    Link

From what I remember, outboard manufacturers were having to do a great deal of warranty work for people who used the cheaper brand of TCW-2 oil. This was because the TCW-2 spec was very loose on a handful of critical parameters and allowed makers to cut corners.

As a result, the three major companies (Merc, Yammy, OMC) got together and generated the TCW-3 spec, which was adequately tight on all critical parameters. I run the cheap TCW-3 stuff and don’t think twice about it.
