Merc Alarm

I started having an issue with my 1993 Merc 60 hp (2-stroke, 3 cylinder, tiller, oil-injected, power trim).

It started sounding a continuous alarm on plane. It briefly went away, but soon started again. I believe the continuous alarm signals overheating, but the motor is shooting a strong stream, so I believe the impeller is fine. The alarm also sounds continuously when I turn the key on but don’t start the motor, so I believe there is either something wrong with the sensor or the alarm module.

Any ideas how to trouble-shoot the culprit?

I had the same issue with mine on low speeds a couple of years ago. The water stream was strong but still overheated. Then it started to do it on plane. Had my impeller replaced and all is well. Just because you have a solid stream doesn’t mean your impeller is in great working order.

Ryan I have the same motor as you. Last fall it would sound the high temp alarm after trolling for a while, and then it would go away if I ran around at higher speeds for a while. I was getting a steady stream of water out the pee hole too.

I replaced the impeller (Many thanks again Jon J.!) and that eliminated the alarm problem. The other thing I noticed is that the stream is MUCH stronger than it was before. At idle, the sound of the stream hitting the river can be heard over the sound of the engine, and it pokes a hole an inch deep into the river. The conclusion was that even a steady stream doesn’t necessarily mean the impeller is OK.

yep hot engine alarm, a beep…beep…is the oil alarm, either out of oil or the cap on the oil resivoir is loose or cracked and she is sucking air, not oil.

I have my 135 Merc in the shop with the same issues and it turned out to be the gear that drives the oil pump . Big job and LOTS of money ,hope that’s not your case .

I could see that being the case except I get the overheat alarm even with the motor off but the key on.

Sure, when I had the alarm I could turn off the motor then tern the key on and still have the alarm. I’m pretty positive you have to replace your impeller.

I have had the same issue with my 99 merc 3 times. I unhook the power to the battery to resolve the issue. Then reattach and the alarm stops. I believe it is a low oil sensor that is causing the problem. Luckily it doesn’t happen that often that I have wanted to replace it.

I am talking about turning the key on the next day, so there is no reason it would be hot.

I do believe theat the “stream” is simply an indicator that the water pump is pumping water. It doesn’t tell you how well it is pumping water.

Please correct me if I am wrong…

Every time I turn the key to “on” even with the motor at room temp the beeper sounds for maybe 5 seconds then quits.

Sounds like your alarm is bad. Mine went out on a 93 merc 50 hp.

Had the same problem on my 75 hp of the same era. If you remove the upper cowling you should be able to find the temp sensor, it is located at the back of the engine between the plugs on mine it may be elsewhere on the head of yours. It is a dime sized sensor that fits into the head. It has one wire attached, if you remove it from the block it will not have a ground path. If you still have your alarm it is probably not the sensor. The module is easy to replace, on mine it is located on the front left side of the motor next to the oil tank.

This is normal, it is a self test of the alarm horn to make sure it works, like most of the lights on the dash coming on when you turn the key to on.

I get that, too, but then the constant alarm comes on. I dropped it off at the shop today, so we’ll see what the experts say. He thought it sounded like the alarm module.

It was the alarm module on mine as well. It was an easy fix, I would guess the entire repair took me an hour and the parts were around $125 if I remember correctly so it should not be too bad.

    Good Luck

‘Twas the alarm module. I had them replace the impeller as long as I had it in the shop, so all is good to go.
