Electric Fillet Knife Suggestions.

    Hi all,
My brother-in-law and I are sick and tired of our electric fillet knives. We both switched from the cheapo Walmart units to newer more expensive brand name knives last year and threw away the cheapos. Now we want them back. We have 2 different brands and neither is an fast nor as efficient as we’d like them to be.
    So here’s the question:
Who makes a GREAT electric fillet knife?
Money is last on the list of priorities.
Must be powerful, compact, efficient, and running on 12 volts is a plus, but not an absolute.

I either need to find a better knife, or throw back all walleyes bigger than 15″.

    Your input is appreciated, thanks.

i went to the 120v model of the popular brand and was pleasantly surprised. BUT, i put the long knife on it. it’s been working quite well for me. in fact, wish i’d had it a number of years earlier…

I can only pass along info from a post a few years back when someone asked about electric knives.

The young lady at Wigwam Resort that at times cleans 1000 fish a day (a quote from her boss) said the Rapala knife was the one she preferred. She had a list of reasons, but I don’t recall what they were and don’t have a clue of the price.

I just figured if it’s good enough for the Wigwam Expert it should be a great knife.

    110v model.

    Hope that helps a little.

I’ve had a rapala corded fillet knife for about 4 years now. Still going strong, although after a few bigger fish, it starts to heat up. Other than that it cuts like a dream and does a good job. It came with hookups for a 12 volt battery, cigarette lighter adapter, and wall plug in. I had a cordless before this and the battery died too fast IMO.

I’ve got the Mister Twister, saltwater (blue&white) and it works great! The guys who do all the filleting for a lot of the charter boats on Lake Eerie use them. After seeing the fish they do in a day, I was sold and have been very happy with it. They run about $40 and only 110V.

I am just on my 2nd Mister Twister. First one lasted 8 years. I replaced the blades once in those 8 years. Now on my 2nd. I love it. I do NOT clean lots of fish and the ones I do are mostly pan fish in the winter. It took me a bit to get used to the electric, but now would have a hard time going back. Mine is plug in model since I have not found the need to go cordless yet. Thats my 2 cents.

X3 on the mister twister. Have had it 4 years now and it has served me well. Blades stay sharp and it very easy to use after getting the hang of it.

What expensive knife did you toss?

Have had good luck with my American Angler.

I use the Hamilton Beach basic electric carving knife. 110v and works perfect for me. I had used a Rapala one a couple years back and my only complaint was the small blades. I see some packaged with longer blades but haven’t used them

I had the cordless Rapala and stopped using it. The blades don’t move fast enough for me and battery life is an issue. I am now using the $12 B&D from Walton’s store. I just wish it had a pointed blade. I like the performance and the way it feels in my paw.

I tried the Mister Twister and hated it. Too fat of a handle for my liking.

Had a couple Rapalas, 110 volt and the other that could go either way. Hated them all. The regular 110 volt got hot quick…. hot enough that you couldn’t keep holding it. Returned it, and other was the same… I would try holding it to keep vents clear, and it didn’t matter… simply sucked. The 12 volt/ 110volt model wasn’t any better, slow, hot, and heavy. Had a few other guys I know not happy with Rapalas for the same reasons. Went with the Mr Twister, and it is much better. Cord is a little short, but I just use a short, light extension and am good to go. Killed the first one after several years, and bought another… just as happy with it.

the rapala still comes with the short knife, but they do now offer a longer version as an AM. Supposed to fit all brands…

I have been using a corded Rapala for several years, it works good, it does get warm if you are ripping through large #s of fish but not uncomfortably so.

Couple trips a year where we have big groups 6-10 people on one and 10-16 on the other and I have cleaned a pile of walleyes with 1 or 2 other guys so the knife got a good work out and it never got too warm to handle.

I may have gotten lucky with my knife though because a lot of people talk about the warm handle on the Rapala knives.

I ripped through several dozen rainy eyes three days ago in one sitting with a Rapala Lith-ION rechargeable and I have no complaints here. Truth be told I though the speed was very good. The handle didn’t get hot in any way that I noticed.

American Angler 110/12. Runs on both AC plug or 12v DC. I run mine on a little 12V SLA battery and have done hundreds of fish already this year without charging the little battery.

Cleaned a 28″ northern earlier this year and it didnt even slow down going through the rib bones.

I use a Rapala Corded model and works great. I used the long blades as well. Not sure what you mean by “big fish” but I generally don’t clean any eyes over 19″ unless there’s a gut hook.

I just picked one of these up too and they’re very nice! Pointed blades and the battery life is great. It has enough power to clean limits for a boat load of guys.

I clean most of my fish on my tailgate so having a cordless is a must.

x2 on the Americam Angler. Mine is 8 to 10 years old and on the second set of blades. It came in a zippered bag with 2 types of knifes and a netted style of a glove. I added quart ziplock bags and a hand filet knife to it. 110volt still serving me extreamly well!

i’ll go X3 on the AA.
stopped at the big C in mitchell, sd, on our way to oahe 10 years ago, bought one and it fried after cleaning a couple limits.
exchanged it on the way back and that knife is still going strong. needed new blades last year and C and GM no longer carried the AA blades, so i got rapala blades and they work better than the AA replacements.
i guess this is an endorsement, even though it took two to get a good one.

James–Is that their highest end model? They have three or four options it would seem. I need to pick up an electric blade (I’m one of those Neanderthals that still uses regular knives) and was looking at this one but this talk of hot handles concerns me a bit.

    This is the one.

This winter I did 40+ perch in one sitting without any sense that the battery was getting low on charge and I’ve not had any issues with the handle heating up. I can’t speak to the durability as I’ve only had it since late winter but so far so good. Completely pleased with it.

    James,
If battery dies, can you run on AC by just plugging it in?

Not the one I have. Battery only. I haven’t checked out all their combos and options so there very well might be an option that allows for it to be plugged in as well.

Checked with Rapala, will not run while plugged in. “Good Luck” was their response. Not warm, not fuzzy.
