I’ve had external additional tranny coolers in trucks before, and I was just sitting here thinking….how much good do they really provide? I know any additional cooling does help, but how much? Worth it to put another one my current truck?

I have a ’98 Z71, so I’m thinking it has one already, not real sure on that. But making it last is always a priority.

If you do think they are beneficial, which do you think is better; the tube and fin style like an a/c condensor? Or the long, cylindrical finned style?

Definitely beneficial if you tow a lot (boat, trailers, etc). Not sure what style would be best…

They are very beneficial especially to our vulnerable 4l60e’s.
That being said only if you tow with the truck or drive under extreme conditions, the bigger the cooler the better the stock one is not doing a whole lot of good it is very small. I would only buy one with thermostatically controlled bypass valve in the north country if the truck sees winter use, without it the trans will not get the opportunity to get up to a good operating temp.

If you are pulling something big enough to over heat that trucks trans ,you are pulling TOO MUCH and need a heavier duty truck.

I have a 1996 Z71 with 242,000 on it and it goes thru hell when pulling my car trailer and I have NEVER had any hot trans issues.(have trans gauge installed)

Just make sure your current radiator has good flow and change trans fluid/filter 18 months if you work it and you will be just fine .
