Just asking for input on this one. The boat steering wheel has become very hard to turn, almost to the point of locking up. Anyone have any tips on fixing this? It does not have the power steering like newer boats. It’s a 2001 Triton. Not really sure where to start.

    Thanks.

Steering cable sound like its binding up due to crossion and dried up grease. Some are servicable and most you just need to replace. Had one break in rough water way out on LOTW and wasn’t sure if we were coming back!

It could be a number of things:
wore out rack (that is the piece right by the motor) or it may just need to be cleaned a greased well, might be a kinked or frayed cable that is binding, it could be a bind where the motor turns back and forth(usually a grease zerk for that) or something in the column itself. That should get you started of things to check! Try to listen for an unusual sound.

it’s doesn’t take much work to unhook the cable from the motor…if the motor swings fine it’s the cable…replaced one on an old lund on the shore of winnie a real pain in the butt..cost $125 for the cable and a couple of hours..a pain but do able..save the old cable..great rigging tool
