minnow buckets and new invasive species laws

Does anyone have a decent plan for keeping bait alive with all the new MN invasive species laws??? I thought about keeping clean water in the truck while fishing but a 90 degree day will wreck that plan.

    Ideas???

Just use a water cooler filled with Ice, whether you keep it in the boat for water to drink or just want to use it for minnow bucket water, should be all you need.

If leaving in you vehicle, throw a blanket or old jacket over to help insulate from the summer heat. Should hold the ice and water to dump into your minnow bucket.

I have to go check, but I think by placing a sticker on your bucket you should get by.

(sorry, there isn’t a plan and it’s already breaking the law by transporting any water away from MN lakes and rivers)

Plastics and crank baits after they’ve been sterilized.

I’ve been watching a lot of those drug smuggling shows, so I’ve got some ideas on how to fabricate some hidden compartments in my baitwell and boat cooler.

It’s weird that people don’t notice that

Last week our local radio “fishing show” guy says that you can save leftover minnows to use “in the same water you came from”….
I wonder if anyone will be fined for following this advice?

gonna have to start putting AIS stickers on all of my coolers, that way i can transport my bait still.

Let me try to understand this…

clean water from the tap, into a clean cooler, bait (which has been living in the same water) is placed in the cooler.

bait is scooped up with a bait net that stays in the cooler (no reason to use it elsewhere)

bait placed in water, either comes off hook due to fish, or is discarded when leaving, due to being hooked(not putting back in the tank).

What exactly is the problem here? clean water, and nothing that even remotely could be “infected”, yet i’m supposed to dump my cooler of bullies either out when done fishing, or have transport water/cooler waiting back at the truck.

    Yeah Right….

I dont care and wont try to comply as long as I am only using them in one body of water. I’m not tolerating ridiculous laws. I’ll reuse minnows and transport my catch home alive. Catch me if you can.

Get you one of those battery powered aerators. Put a bucket of water in your truck, then when you are done fishing transfer your minnows to the water. If it is really hot out, you could probably throw some ice in there to keep it cool.

One of those mesh minnow bags would come in handy for that.

ALL water that enters your boat must be dumped before you leave. If it never enters your boat, you can keep it. Bait, without water, may be transferred back into your truck as long as you don’t take any water with it.

This is what a CO told me.

I guess you just need to think about what is logical and easily enforceable. This makes perfect sense to me.

The CO i talked to did not care or beleive me that the water in my minnow bucket was not taintd with that filthy lake water. I can assure you that $3 in minnows isn’t worth a debate or ticket.

Ahh, but $60 is when you are fishing the rainy river. Thats why I have always brought a large cooler with the majority of my minnows and leave it in the truck. I only take what I need for the day and when I’m done I just transfer them back to the cooler when I pull my boat out. I did this long before there was a law in place.

I really don’t see where the issue is here. I know that keeping of bullheads might be a little more difficult, but is it impossible?

When do they plan on having cleaning stations in place for this? Or will we have to leave all of our lures at the access???

i freeze up blocks of ice in old juice boxes and use them for my minnows. 1 qt per 5 gal pail works well.

Just looking for confirmation on this AIS sticker that is all the rage. Is this mandatory now? I thought it was not required until 2014. And what is with them writing you a warning ticket. How can they write you a warning for a proposed law that is not currently in effect? WTH!

Remember Mud, you are in WI. What the fella said it true for YOU in WI.

Flathead fishermen will normally have around $30. of bait on a given night.

It’s just another law that assumes you are guilty.

Seriously, this law seems stupid but I have an aerated bait bucket that I will carry in the truck. I keep my minnows in bait bags usually, so it shouldn’t be hard to transfer them. I guess I can do the same with leeches as well. In the real hot months its mostly cranks or crawlers for me.

Like I said last year during the first month of season when I am using shiners and staying at my cabin I am not going to empty my baitwell at the landing for a 1/2 mile ride. To keep the bait cool overnight I fill the baitwell with the hose and run aerators all night.

After the weekend and time to head home I will put the unused bait in the lake trap we have.

I don’t see a problem with this and I am not hurting the lake. 99.9% of the people camping on the lake(or any given lake) will be doing the same thing. Leeches are easy cause I always have them in a bait container filled with ice and water from home.

Anytime I plan on heading to a new body of water my boat gets a full wash inside and out and has time to dry for a few days. I feel I do my part in preventing the spread of invasive species.

No way any of our boats are tossing expensive shiners from opening day to second day. We treat them like royalty to keep them alive.

trout fishing nets work great for switching bait containers. For the minnow bucket in the truck,I keep a minnow bucket in the refrigerator over night and a frozen bottle of water in it. In 90-100 temps it stays pretty cool. I had to go out and buy another $70 minnow bucket…but it works alright. Really dumb law.

i was told by the ais police that NO water can be transported in the boat. not even a half drank gallon of spring water, if the seal is broken, it could have been contamanated.
