Universal sonar or not?

I’m going to be buying a new trolling motor and i’m wondering if universal sonar is the way to go. On my targa I just had the transducer on the motor but it seemed to be a pain with the wires going up the shaft sometimes. Are there any downfalls to the universal sonar?

US2 only provides 2D imaging. No side or down imaging without additional transducer.

I could see using DI on the trolling motor but not SI. Too much turning of the motor for any good shots on SI. I would opt to get your new motor with the US2. I did but don’t plan on using it this year. Dumpped too much in the motor to afford a sonar for it this year.

Depending on the type of motor, running the wire if you don’t go US2 can be a pain. The way the Terrova deploys makes running an external wire a little tricky. I know guys have had issues with the US2 and Humminbird having interference. My HDS units have worked flawlessly with the US2.

It won’t be a ds or si unit so I should be good to go. Thanks for the info.

100% go with the US2. I know that fixing crimped or broken tranducer cables sucks

When I got my Terrova I skipped the US2 based on the advice of the guys at Motor Clinic in Bloomington-they said you get a better quality signal/return using the factory transducer(HB 788ci, no DI/SI).
Now after having to replace 2 transducers after breaking off the wires, I wish I didn’t listen to them.

I opted out on US2 as I would never have a trolling motor transducer without SI. Been using it for years as well as the older wideside. It is so much better to have the SI up front. You can wire the Humminbird cable down the Terrova shaft. Having it up front gives me a 17′ early detection advantage. I am at the point where my finder tells me when to set the hook by the fish image point on the display. You
can also do a 360 when anchored. You just need to know how the finder will display things when turning the head.

I bought a terrova with it on it. I won’t buy another motor without having it. It’s awesome!

Rerig your transducer cable thru your terrova shaft.. Pop the head off the Terrova and pull it out of the steering collet. Thread your trasnducer cable thru the steering collet and reinstall the shaft, threading the cable in the slot in the shaft. Re mount the head on the Terrova, and secure the cable at the top and bottom with a couple zip ties.
