The local dealer told me that a charging system off of your engines alernator would lower the life span of your deep cycle batteries. Is there a product on the market that will charge your deep cycle batteries of of your alernator and not harm your deep cycle batteries?

The problem is that usually the engine is not running at a high RPM for a long enough time to fully charge the batteries.

Many of us use a 10-15 AMP on board charger. Once you are back to shore with a power source, just plug it in and be done with it.

That couldn’t be any further from the truth! Charging is charging, as long as you don’t over amp or over volt and as long as you charge complete, meaning you fill your battery with complete amps.

While the alternator will supply a small charge, it probably will not be enough to fully charge. That is probably what the dealer meant…….meaning that you won’t get a full, top-off-charge.

Its not really that they are harmed them, it is just they do not draw down far enough before charging so you are constantly just topping them off and they build a memory.

Aren’t most trucks have something like a 120-150 amp alternator? Meaning it’s very likely to fry your marine batteries.
